Advice... what is more important? Cabinet or Speakers?

Yeah, I'd look around on CL and used.guitarcenter.com and see what you can find for cheap.

The Egnater 4x12s are great cabs, and can be found cheap. They come stock with V30s, and they were floating around used at a lot of GCs back when I used to go there. Just make the GC folks open it up to make sure someone hasn't made off with the V30s.

Dude, there are all kinds of deals out there for used cabinets if you look. I spent 5 minutes searching in your area and came up with 3 options:

Here's a guy selling a mesa 4x12 and a crappy marshall head for $300
http://evansville.craigslist.org/msg/4023258089.html

Wow. What more do you want? You get a Mesa cab to match your Recto, and you get a back-up amp. For $300.

yeah. contacting that one today... I always forget about Evansville.

a buddy of mine just picked up a 412x for $425 yesterday while visiting in St. Louis.

If you have to choose, I say speakers were more important than the cab.

Had a VHT d412 , now using peavey ms412 same speakers and not a huge difference.

Yes the quality comparison is a no brainer and the VHT did sound better. The difference wasn't astronomical.
The key is trying the D412 without the P50E speakers ;)

That was done without question.

However I'd like to add, before I sold the cab I put the p50 back in and was very surprised.

Almost like sound for sore ears :/

75x30 I still favor, but when I added the p50 for a full stack it was a damn near perfect sound.

Another option would be a good closed back 1x12, if you are playing in a Worship setting I am sure volume is an issue and your Recto is only 50w so and Avatar with a V30 or even the Orange 1x12 cab with a V30 would be great, light weight and not as loud as a 4x12...

I swapped the same speakers in some cabs, and restored a 4X12.
Every little thing make a difference, the back panel too.

So both are important.

There are several really good cab deals right here, just flipped thru the classifieds and several within your budget...

You can get them even cheaper if you're willing to call GCs out of your area. Shipping (if they charge it) is usually reasonable.

i'd have to go the long term betty.
as opposed to the negative Nancy's, & lazy Susan's

The combination is most important. That being said, the speakers account for 60-75% of the sound IMO, so....speakers are slightly more important.
How did you arrive at your 60-75% figures?

IMO it's a combination of the two, and it's different every time depending on what that combination is.. You simply can't definitively point to one over the other.

Just a guess really, hence the range. V30s have certain qualities you can hear regardless of the cab they're in as do almost all speakers.

I built a 4x12 this week based on the Bogner/Friedman design and put a quad of Scumback BM75-LD, sounds pretty good. Cab's do make a difference, but IMO I think the speaker will make a bigger difference.

Here is the dilemma, I only have a couple hundred bucks to spend, and while I will be eventually getting a Rectifier 4x12, here are my options right now because I HAVE TO PLAY THIS NEW HEAD!!!!
Marshall 4x12s - especially when they're well broken in - sound as good as the best, IMO (I have a 1960b with T75s that honestly sounds better than my straight Recto 4x12 in the room). Moreover, they can be had all day long for $300 or under on craigslist. Hell, I bought a JCM900 slant 4x12 from a GC across the country and it only cost $330 (with shipping!!!).

That looks fantastic. and not too terribly hard to build... any chance you could pm the measurements? That doubling of the plywood is something I had not seen before.

Marshall 1960 cabs on craigslist for under 300 ALL DAY LONG... seriously, there are always a few one just about any areas craigslist... and I have come to like these cabs more than 90% of everything out there...

Those P50Es need to be broken in.

Steven Fryette knows a thing or two about sound.
