Yeah, I'd look around on CL and used.guitarcenter.com and see what you can find for cheap.

Here's a guy selling a mesa 4x12 and a crappy marshall head for $300

Wow. What more do you want? You get a Mesa cab to match your Recto, and you get a back-up amp. For $300.

Had a VHT d412 , now using peavey ms412 same speakers and not a huge difference.
Yes the quality comparison is a no brainer and the VHT did sound better. The difference wasn't astronomical.![]()
You can get them even cheaper if you're willing to call GCs out of your area. Shipping (if they charge it) is usually reasonable.Milerky2":1cj1biex said:squank":1cj1biex said:The Egnater 4x12s are great cabs, and can be found cheap. a buddy of mine just picked up a 412x for $425 yesterday while visiting in St. Louis.
How did you arrive at your 60-75% figures?Tone Monster":xwcbzupf said:The combination is most important. That being said, the speakers account for 60-75% of the sound IMO, so....speakers are slightly more important.

IMO it's a combination of the two, and it's different every time depending on what that combination is.. You simply can't definitively point to one over the other.

Marshall 4x12s - especially when they're well broken in - sound as good as the best, IMO (I have a 1960b with T75s that honestly sounds better than my straight Recto 4x12 in the room). Moreover, they can be had all day long for $300 or under on craigslist. Hell, I bought a JCM900 slant 4x12 from a GC across the country and it only cost $330 (with shipping!!!).Milerky2":3bhnr58v said:Here is the dilemma, I only have a couple hundred bucks to spend, and while I will be eventually getting a Rectifier 4x12, here are my options right now because I HAVE TO PLAY THIS NEW HEAD!!!!

Those P50Es need to be broken in.maddnotez":2bbf2n1o said:Ventura":2bbf2n1o said:The key is trying the D412 without the P50E speakersmaddnotez":2bbf2n1o said:If you have to choose, I say speakers were more important than the cab.

That was done without question.
However I'd like to add, before I sold the cab I put the p50 back in and was very surprised.
Almost like sound for sore ears :/
75x30 I still favor, but when I added the p50 for a full stack it was a damn near perfect sound.
