If you have to choose, I say speakers were more important than the cab.

Had a VHT d412 , now using peavey ms412 same speakers and not a huge difference.

Yes the quality comparison is a no brainer and the VHT did sound better. The difference wasn't astronomical.
The key is trying the D412 without the P50E speakers ;)

That was done without question.

However I'd like to add, before I sold the cab I put the p50 back in and was very surprised.

Almost like sound for sore ears :/

75x30 I still favor, but when I added the p50 for a full stack it was a damn near perfect sound.
Those P50Es need to be broken in.

Steven Fryette knows a thing or two about sound.

It was a demo cab

Here is the dilemma, I only have a couple hundred bucks to spend, and while I will be eventually getting a Rectifier 4x12, here are my options right now because I HAVE TO PLAY THIS NEW HEAD!!!!
Marshall 4x12s - especially when they're well broken in - sound as good as the best, IMO (I have a 1960b with T75s that honestly sounds better than my straight Recto 4x12 in the room). Moreover, they can be had all day long for $300 or under on craigslist. Hell, I bought a JCM900 slant 4x12 from a GC across the country and it only cost $330 (with shipping!!!).

i concur. i got my 83 JCM800 cab for cheap. i even gave the guy a few more bucks for gas because he lowered the price when i already said i was going to buy it! it did come with G12M70s however, but ive since ditched them and gone with Retro 30s and G12T75s and the cab ROARS. it goes great with my Single Recto.

I was obsessed with finding the perfect cab a couple years ago and must have played through 15 different 4x12's and 2x12's over the course of 2 weeks. I have an old Ibanez "Tone Blaster" 4x12 cab that I bought many years ago that I can never bring myself to get rid of because it makes a great loaner cab when buddies come over to jam (one less back breaking trip into the basement) and I was shocked to find that it kept up with most of the high dollar cabs in both sound quality and clarity under high volumes.
Sometimes you can get a cheapo cab that turns out to be a real gem so I'd advise you to play a bunch of different cabs instead of buying on brand alone.
