Amps that have No Soul !

The Mako Dorado I had was cool, but it was too stiff and modern for me. I guess that translates to "no soul."

When I think about it, any high gain amp is lacking in "soul." You want soul, you need to plug into an old Fender, Marshall, or Hiwatt. Other than that, it's all about preamp gain.

Blue Voodoo. Never was entirely happy with mine, and the more I learned/heard the more stale it felt.
;)
+1 on this. I played thru one at a guitar competition I entered, and I have never played thru a stiffer tube amp.

Heard Marty Friedman at a guitar workshop play through a BORROWED stock Blue Voodoo head and matching cab. Not my cup of tea, but then I watched him from 10 feet away blast through tons of megadeth and other solos and it sounded great. Was dry because it was guitar > amp no effects, but I was amazed.

It's a poor carpenter that blames his tools.

A great player will be able to make any rig sound good IMO. I remember trying a dimebag washburn sig into a blue voodoo and matching 4X12 in the late 90s. Honestly, I thought it was pretty good for metal exactly as is. It wouldn't be my first choice but it's not nearly as bad as they're made out to me IMO. Same thing with 900s. I hated my 900 2x12 combo due to it being harsh and breaking down repeatedly but through a 4X12 the same 75s sound much better than open back combo form.

I think if you could take something like that Marty Frieman workshop and have a DI of it and were able to reamp it through a ton of different amps they would all sound pretty good. Even on amps that are seen as "sucking" on forums.

What's the UOM of "Soul" so I can check this on the spec sheet before my next amp purchase?

I suggest using "JamesBrown" as an industry standard.

"Wow! This amp cranks out 37.5 JamesBrowns! That's a lot of Soul for a 50 watt amp!"

Poo. I thought mine was insightful. Oh well. :(

If you think your amp has no soul, try taking your preamp tube covers off. I hear that does the trick!

I never got along with my old JCM900. My Bogner XTC was a tough sell until I used it in a band setting. Then the light bulb went on and I got what that amp is all about...

Amps like people do not have souls .... It is this kind of fantasy made up stuff that allows people to believe all kinds of things about gear & whatever.

Judging gear or anything else by clips is silly at best.

IMO..."Soul" refers to what a player feels from an amp. It has nothing to do with what a spectator "hears.". So all of this "He sounded great on any amp" is irrellevant to this thread......again, IMO.

I think this is true for the most part...

As for me I would have to say HERBERT. Cold, Mechanical, Dry, and very, very STIFF... Tight No Give = I couldn't play it worth a Damm!

That said I've heard others play it well... So it leads me to believe it's definately a amp player interaction thing. I love Loose, Sweet sounding amps with Moan in their Tone! :D When I play an amp like that feeling just seems to come out of my fingers.

When I listen to soul I think of SRV, Robin Trower playing Day Dream, Hendrix... A lot of the amps seem to be old Marshalls... so for me I guess that's it.

All I know is when I play this thing... It makes me happy!

All of my MTS amps. The modified preamps are a thing a beauty, but how much soul can a power amp with module bays have?

Traynor YCS50
Bogner/ Line 6 Spider Valve MKii
Diezel Herbert
Roland JC
Peavey JSX

I don't get why people rag on Krank so much. If you know how to dial one in, a Krankenstein+ can sound awesome.

Love for Kranks but not for Herberts?!

Each to their own, for sure!

The VH4 is cool, but the Herbert never did anything for me.

I'm not a huge fan of Krank amps, but I've been able to get great tones out of them- volume, gain, mids and bass maxed, treble at 1PM, mid sweep as 9 o'clock. Then all it takes is a little tweaking and Bingo, Kranks will sound very good!

Try one with the mid-cut off if you haven't. The mid-cut sucks the soul outta the Herbert imo.
I've had sound men coming up to me lately complimenting my warm tones. It feels much more natural with it off. Forget that stiff/cold feeling.
