Back then the banks were pimping option ARM's while giving the loans to people with fraudulent socials and stated income. The borrower didn't need to prove their identity let alone their income lol. I worked for the bank that basically made that a gold standard. The owners (The Sandlers) of the bank sold it to Wachovia which continued those shitty option ARM's which then caused Wachovia to go under in a year. The Sandlers knew exactly what they were doing and cashed out right before shit hit the fan.
Edit: just saw your edit. China doesn’t even have the amount of data centers the US has and there are like 5000 more planned here. Pure insanity. We used to mock China for the way it is but the US is going in a far more dystopian direction.
I saw a comment on a video about data centers and one commenter said “you use YouTube so you need data centers! It’s the future!!”
Apparently we need to keep building data centers, some being built by taking people’s property via eminent domain, so we can keep our precious YouTube and enjoy the AI slop being heavily promoted. YouTube didn’t need 5000 data centers before but now it does. But it’s the future! Yeah, it’s dystopian as all hell.

This is what makes me think its a giant scam- the US has 4300+ data centers and is putting all that cash into AI stock, but China isn't. China has 350 data centers. Germany and the UK each have 500+ data centers.
Why would the country with the largest GDP, and is arguably the most technologically advanced at this point, not be doing everything in their power to beat out the US with this shit? Why would they have less than even the UK? Makes zero sense if AI/data centers were so crucial to the success of the nation/economy.
These data centers are generating no value, they are spending like $50,000 for every dollar in return, they are driving up utility costs to crazy amounts...but they are going to be magic money printers one day, right?

I think the tale they are telling is that business in the near future will all need access to AI to run shit, so there's lots of them in order to service the need, you pay to have the data center use AI to figure out whatever you want figured out. IDK.
