Generally, I think the problem is the opposite: bands stay together too long.

The Beatles jump to mind as one that ended prematurely. Even their worst albums included several gems, and they had a way of pushing/evolving the format in unique ways. I'm not even a Beatles fan, and it's still obvious to me that they had a lot of greatness left in them.

The Rolling Stones with Mick Taylor. Those albums were insanely perfect. The world is worse off for their going separate ways.

Cry of Love
Badlands...couldn't anyway without Ray(RIP)
VH with MA

the original Kingdom Come...that first album was EPIC...not one bad song...then they got a bum deal...just my opinion...

Pink Floyd. I still think The Final Cut was a good album, and they had more left in them.

Soundgarden came back, but I wish they hadn't broken up to begin with. I think King Animal was a great album... it just came 14 years too late.

The Mars Volta fizzled when they kicked Jon Theodore out (or he quit, whatever happened). That band had so much going for them.

Mr. Bungle broke up too early. I liked the direction they were going with California and that band, in all, was so amazingly talented and quirky. Always a surprise listening to them.

Hendrix and Buckley, I agree. Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is awesome, and I really wonder what it would have been if he were alive to realize it. He had limitless potential. Such a great vocalist and also a great rhythm guitarist and songwriter.

The Beatles. I am not the biggest Nirvana fan but I thought they were going in the right direction. I thought they were going to get better.

I think Rage had already peaked when they broke up--they were never able to evolve.

AC/DC with Bon Scott was the real AC/DC to me... Brian Johnson never really compared.

Alice in Chains had effectively broken up in the late '90's with Layne Staley not really being around to contribute anymore. The last few tracks they did (Get Born Again and Died) were awesome. That iteration of the band had so much left to offer if they could have ever gotten healthy.

I agree with all of this apart from the Brian Johnson thing. Brian Johnson is more of a showman and a MASSSIVE live presence and I don't know that ACDC becomes the god sized band they are without him. His vocals are bigger as well. Bon Scott's style is incredible and I love his voice but I feel Johnson took the band to another level. Everything else you said here is perfection.

This thread made me think of many musicians who died prematurely, but I don't think that's the point of the thread (although I see a few mentions such as Bon Scott).

I'll just throw one out there though; I was really upset when Quorthon of Bathory died. Nordland I and II were what got me into Viking metal and he was going to create III and IV. I would've loved to have seen where those went.

Candle Box (?)

Still around, as far as I know. We were supposed to play a show with them last year on the 20th anniversary of their self titled album, but the promoter pushed the tour south a few dates early.

Ah, someone else with a hardcore/punk background. Cool!

I come from metal roots but I played in hardcore and skate punk bands in the 90s. SO many amazing punk, hardcore and ska bands in the 90s. Some of my favourite music of any era.
