I played original music for years in my 20's and early 30's, mostly heavy/punk stuff. Played for a while in an AC/DC tribute in the late 90's and it was a blast. It was easy because they're my favorite band and I finally got to play with the tone I wanted to on-stage as trying to get people to play music in an AC/DC style or approach was near impossible. Even in the 2000's (my 30's decade) it was pathetic trying to find people in Seattle who earnestly wanted to write original new material but with a classic/hard rock approach. It always had to have a punk or metal slant and I wanted to do it very authentically. I'm glad I at least had the Tribute experience to feel that sound on stage.

All the talk about musician vs. artist vs. composer vs. guitar player is ridiculous. I play music for my own ya ya's. I couldn't give a toss what anyone thinks of what I do. I know what it is.

I'm playin' with some guys now (the drummer n bassist) who were in a Tool tribute called "Undertow" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jyfJ7YC ... re=related )

We're doing originals now but I thought their cover band was extremely tight (not to mention they found someone who sounded pretty dang close to Maynard)

Anyway, these kinds of cover bands would be the only thing I could stay sane in... still doing originals must be happening somehow as a tribute/cover band is really only good for either making some quick $, having fun, or getting live practice in. Nothin' wrong with that though...

I also think in the classical 'scene,' there is much more of a separation of the composer and the musician. In Rock, Blues, Jazz, Pop, Country, etc... the band members are the composer, performer, and musician...

no choice in the poll for my thoughts....

If you like it, and there is a demand for it to play live, why not? lots of people make decent money doing things like this, plus the live experience is always fun as well.....

If it's something YOU want to do who cares what anyone else thinks.

FWIW: if I could find the right guys to do a TOOL tribute, I'd joing in a heartbeat.
