Last I heard he switched from dual Mk Vs to a Mk V/Mk IV mix.

i don't know why but it always takes me a long time to get mesa amps zeroed in on the tone i want. just the way they are i guess. magnificent amps though.

I had no problem getting the gain that rich gets, when i had my mark v i used to dial it in similar to richs tone, i also used emgs.

OK, i found 2 Mark V's today and gave them a whirl. A 1x12 combo and a head on a Recto 4x12. I was getting plenty of gain, more than i needed and if i tuned down the guitar's it was similiar to the sound Big Rich was getting. So gain was not an issue.

For me, again, maybe my ears have just changed? I didn't like the tones the Mark V puts out. I'll take the Electra Dyne boosted with an OD pedal over anything the Mark V can do. I guess I've spent too much time playing a modded Marshall.  The crunch mode on the V is better than R2 on the Mark IV, but it's not really what I'd call a Marshall crunch by any strech, but it's a cool tone on it's own. And agian channel 2 sounded bigger than channel 3.

i had the electradyne pushing out MASSIVE BROOTZ without a boost, next time i go to rudys in nyc im gona bring my cam to show how that amp can get into death metal territory lol

that amp has soooooo much bottom end its not even funny.....it honestly has a bigger low end than the rectos have, that amp is sooo insane its a shame it came out the same time as the mark 5 and lives in its shadow

The Electra Dyne is LOUD and it sounds great for a 1x1 combo. Since i have to use low volumes at home often i use a BB Preamp and a Hotplate.

You are proof that brootz is in the hands. It's how you attack the instrument more than what amp you're playing through. The right amp shapes the tone and can help, but if you've got talent, or a lack thereof, the amp is just icing on the cake.

I agree the Mesa sounds like a Mesa and if you are going to try to get Fender/Marshall tones out of it you will never be happy. Once I got past trying to make it sound like a Marshall or Fender I really bonded with it more.
I have had my MK III since early 90's and almost sold it til I did a complete retube. Now I have it dialed in the way I like it to sound. The B/M/T knobs do take a lot of tweaking and effect each other, almost annoying and a pita but makes it very flexible. My Bass is hardly set on 2 and treb on heavy 6 (Its a Combo (2)6l6 only/no EQ with MC90 Black Shadow spkr) also tweaking the Pres knob in the rear made a big difference for me.

I run a THD hot plate but found it sounds like shit if I crank it all the way up. There is a sweet spot between the THD and Mesa that I found. In the loop i run a BBE sonic stomp with the knobs just barely on (around 3) to add "clarity" to my ears.

I have a Luv/Hate relation with it once in a while, but the amp is makes me say "DAMN" most of time. :D

I don't want a love/hate relationship with any amp. I love my Metro every single time I plug in. I think I have to finally put Boogie to bed for me as it's just not a design/tone that will work for me. I've tried many times to bond with all different kinds of models they make and with the exception of the MarkIV (ironically, maybe one of their most tweakable amps) I just can't get any consistency of let's say "the grin". I've never been into relationships with women that are topsy turvy so I sure don't want it with my amps. Maybe for some the perceived "challenge" of making a Boogie work is part of the perceived tonal results. ie. I must be more intuitive than most because I can get this thing rockin'...Must feel good.

Then you my friend need a 20th Anniversary Ecstasy  Luv every F'n time I plug into it, Hell I luv to just sit and watch her

I owned a Mark IV for a long time and loved it (still one of my favorite amps). I am not a dedicated metal player but can hold my own. I could not get the V to sound like my IV. I know Boogies well and understand how to dial them in. Maybe I got a bum one but Big Rich's sounds like it was touched by the hand of God. Glad it works for some of you. I will say that Dan (Danyeo) is a monster player and knows tone. For those that have not been around HCAF in the early 2000s, Dan was a dedicated Mark series player. He know how to dial them in.

I love those clips Big Rich, hell of a tone on both of them. I wanted a Mark IV, but ended up with a Single Rec due to the price. I'm having trouble finding sounds I like right now for High Gain rhythm tones. Everything I do comes out either washed-out sounding, or Fizzy/bright and flubby low end.

Got any tips?

Has anyone tried to get the MKV sound from a MKIV? Any luck?

If you approach the amp expecting to hear a Marshall type tone you are going to be disappointed. A lot of it is mental, but I think the amp's character is in your hands, literally. It doesn't have the 'sustain gain' that a Marshall type amp has where you barely have to do anything to get the amp to make noise and it makes your riffs flow smoothly. I think this leads some people's right hand technique to become a bit lazy because they rely on the 'sustain gain' too much. The V works better and sounds gainier the heavier you pick and you actually have to play smoothly in order for it to sound smooth...

Not in my experience. ;)

In this video I am using a Mesa MKIII Coliseum for the intro clean tone on the R2 channel, a Marshall SLP, when the rhythm gets heavier, and the Boogie Coliseum-- on the lead channel, from the solo out.

Bro I'm telling you, try EL34's or KT77's if you want to get the bias out of crossover distortion and keep some of the bottom chunk of 6L6's. It makes SOOO much difference. It's absolutely a must with rectos.

I'm working on it right now. Might get some Tesla EL34's.

What 77's should I go with? Keep in mind, I have $500 to my name right now, and no car currently

I like JJ E34Ls with my Recto. They have more bottom end than a standard EL34 and are a nice middle ground between the EL34/6L6 sounds.

That is what I use in my Tremoverb most of the time. Hands down best sound comes from some very old 6CA7 I have. But they go for crazy money these days ~ $500 a quad.

JJ KT77's for sure make a huge difference in rectos. I'm using a quad of them in my Roadster and loooove them, the amp sings now, seemed a little drab I found even with winged =c= 6l6s in there. It definitely doesn't change the base tone, it's a recto, just sounds a little more aggressive and gives a little more accentuation to the upper mids.

noobs!!!

damn I can't wait until I get back home again and the powerpoints are finished in the music studio. I'll crank my MarkIV up and give some lessons for you lot.
