I need at least two delays. Sometimes four.
But I don’t expect my amp’s power-amp to deal with them.
I let it groove with the purest saturated tone I can muster.
There’s plenty going on as it is.
Main point - since I set my power amps precisely to distort slightly, the last thing I want is to suddenly give them more level from delays on some stupid loop. My splitter is generally saturated to hell. Things would go downhill very fast.
My amps are then soaked down with load boxes and feed a mixer.
From there I can do anything with that 1V signal.
If I want to gig, then it’s a stereo power amp and two cabs, after an effects rack.
Otherwise, I record from the simulators and use computer effects.
I’ve done it this way for nearly 30 years.

When I record, it's just guitar cable amp. Mics on the cab. Effects are done in the box. Live I want a loop. My days of hauling a rack worth of effects are over. All I need the power tubes to do are breathe. I don't need them to distort. There is more than enough preamp gain on all of my amps. I understand where you are coming from, but it's not a one size fits all. Even pros like Doug Aldrich are using delay in their effects loop. If it's good enough for him, it will work for me. More than one way to skin a cat.
