Dare I ask…?

My gigging days are far behind me, but my last gigging right was a DSL 50 with a boost and a gate. Probably did a hundred gigs with that setup. Thrash band, of course . I switched from an 800 to the DSL mostly because I got tired of being told to turn down.

Madison Square Basement is my gig these days and I’m perfectly happy.

If I were to gig today, I would strongly consider using a Katana with a cab. I like a head and cab. And Price point and functionality appeal to me….if it were to get messed up, I can buy another relatively inexpensively.

If I were gigging today, I’d strongly consider grabbing a blackstar DA100. I like the tone more than the iconic series and they feel great under the fingers. I’d prefer an amp over a modeler.

Ain’t no way I’d be gigging the super rare one off stuff. I’m not big enough to have security on site. I’d get an amp that is grab and go.

I don't know anyone doing church gigs here who isn't using a modeler and silent stages (asides from the drums).

I'm hoping to try out for the church band soon, and the planned rig is 2204->PS100 reactive load->FX and IR loader. Maybe hauling a little DSL1HR for backup. Silent stage, otherwise I'd try to pack a half stack.

Sadly you’re right. Modelers have done more damage than good - one of them being pushing big amps out completely where no sound on stage is impossible to compete with.

I utterly despise them. If all stages were silent and all rigs were modelers I would finally have an amazingly good reason to quit playing guitar.

Theyre not that bad man, just because you use a modeler doesnt mean you cant use an amp as well

They’ll never compete in the feel category. Analog reigns supreme and my amps are a testament to real custom competition. Same as Wizards or others. They compete with regular lifeless fodder, but not where it counts.

A menu just doesn't do it unless we are at a waffle house after the gig. My guitar is a soul machine not a computer. Integrity to my guitar ideals must be upheld at all costs.

I dont disagree with you, i love my tube amps as well.

Its just the ease of playing shows, and while the feel may not be perfect, the sound is pretty close even for purists and indistinguishable for the average individual

I see youre a fan of james tyler guitars based on your signature…jims been dead for several years, but they still make “his” guitars. Is that any more/less authentic than the modelers?

I do. We go to a little farm country Methodist church. I sing too, which is not my best thing but I've made peace with it and I'm getting better.

My rig is typically an ES 335 into a Victoria Victorilux HP+. On the very rare occasion that some sort of gain device is needed, I add my backline pedalboard based around a Radial Tonebone Plexitube and might change guitars depending on exactly what we're doing.

My daughter plays too and has a short scale Squire fat strat and for amp I think she's going to start using the Swart Space Tone Atomic Jr.

I agree with this, but I haven't played any of the higher end modelers. I've owned several over the years, a few flavors of the line 6 pods, XT live, etc. I swore them off for many years but in 2019, I bought a yamaha thr30 and I used that for practice a few years with headphones and bluetooth tracks. It still has the digital odd feel to it.

I've since moved on to a GPDI/IR with an interface. It sounds amazing and it feels like a big tube amp. Sounds and feels just like my pittbull. Some of the factory IRs were boxy but you can easily load your own. The aftermarket IRs are great.

If I tripped over a pile of cash, I might get a PLIR to play my real amps (only own a few) into the interface just for S&G. I'd really like to jam my class 5 with some classic rock tracks and try some pedals. It would be nice to jam any time of day or night. Some of you silent stage guys or apartment guys might be able to use the PLIR with your big amps. The depth / edge controls are pretty responsive on my PS 100 so I imagine the PLIR would let you dial it in just right.
