Dave called me yesterday in response to my latest inquiry. Looks like modding my Marshall is going to be cost-prohibitive. I'm better off selling them both and then just buying a 4550 Deluxe.

Well, if you really want that sound and feel, it's probably the best way to go. I have had mine for about 7 months and I've been very happy. No issues with it at all and like I said, Dave was absolutely great to work with both before and long after buying and receiving the amp. He's good people and builds a wicked plexi.

Playing = good
Tone = bad

Really fizzy. It's probably just an issue of volume, though. You need that amp cooking to sound good. I can hear good tone beneath all the fizziness.
Totally disagree......That there is the good fizz/sizzle that classic Eddie tone has :rock: You hear it all over Ed's isolated VH tracks

Of course if it was cranked more it would sound even better, but you need some fried bacon going on for great brown tone!
I try to tell people this all the time. There's more treble and fizz in Ed's old tone than most people realize.

EVH's "tone" was shit as well. Fizzy and thin. His playing is stellar. But the actual guitar "tone" is horrible. And I wouldn't want that sound for myself. For good tone that is fizz-free... I can't think of much better than that Cameron Jose clip psychodave posted. All growl and grind. No fizz. But whatever, it's just guitar amps lol :)
