Awesome thread!

I hope that he would never stop posting but IMHO I personally don't respect people who talk shit about their peers. Sorry but I don't.

How is Steve Vai any of our peer? The guy is a guitar hero and most of us are just a bunch of schlubs on a forum. Steve Vai is a sick monster on guitar. Pat will admit it. I will admit it. i will also say that like Pat, I feel zero connection in my musical soul with what Steve Vai plays. So we have fun with it and that's all it's ever been. For crying out loud, he posted a picture of Steve Martin as King Tut and The Count from Sesame Street as if they were pics of Vai. That is so freaking creative and funny. It just kills me. Heck, I think even Steve Vai would think that was funny.

Pat, what you should post is that pic from NAMM of you rolling your eyes with Steve Vai sitting behind you signing autographs. We orchestrated that photo op purely for Digijams pleasure.

i honestly get more entertainment watching this than that first vai video:

and btw while vai was establishing himself as a young hot axe slinger,

he made ends meet playing the role of juan epstein on the 70's hit series "welcome back kotter"

another little known fact-
for the record;

albums i bought because vai was playing on it

PIL generic album
alcatrazz disturbing the peace-yngwie was the only thing that made phyliss diller of a vocalist tolerable.

vai passion and warfare/leftovers/sex and religion/alien love secrets--blue powder is my favorite vai tone/musical moment, bad horsie and boy from seattle for recorded tones

dlr eatum and smile/skyscraper--played great on eatum but just too over the top campy and wheezy tone--worked on tour live, but not on record, for me.

whitesnake slip of the tongue-yikers.

he was killing it on the eatum and smile tour, lost in on skyscraper, really lost it on slip of the tongue, and just really never recovered imo
last time i saw him was hollywood bowl on the first G3 tour and it was just over for me after that.

i think i've done my share of supporting him financially, and hoping he turns a corner musically.

take the wah, whammy bar, right hand tapping, and pitch effects away from him and hand him a paul and a cranked bassman.

and NO FAN.

You pretty much nailed EVH through the 90s and and most of the 2000s there Pat, just add several bottles of ripple, hobo sneakers, meth smile and a sustainer dimed

Tweed sent me the Pat / Vai pic, I need to upload that sucker to the p-bucket.

Deeper the Love solo is an epic piece, fits so well and Coverdale got his $1,000,000 worth when he signed Vai on.

Last NAMM was awarded the Les Paul award

OMG!! LLLOLL!L!OOLL!!L!

WHEN THE FAN GOES ON, HE TURNS INTO WOODY ALLEN!!!

Tried to upload that pic to the forum this morning, but it kept timing out. ;)

Thought I had it here with me at work, but can't seem to put my finger on it...

you forgot vh ripping off gilbert's makita drill trick to reinvent himself.

i'm not trying to say eddie wasn't a hot mess. he made vai look like abraham lincoln and i thought he was headed for a pine box any minute, but for me, vh had 3-4 full albums worth of legendary rock anthems,

and i can't think of one song by vai that i've set to memory or ever wanted to learn how to play. he plays the guitar very well but his songwriting is out of control and gives me the *impression* that his success gets to his head musically so that he is surrounded by yes men and he self produces so no one is there to say "steve, that's crap."

i swear i'd buy the next vai album if he just plugged a les paul into a bassman for the whole enchilada, dialed in a sweet tone, no tricks, whammy this, tapping that, wah every solo, eventide 12 voice choir patches, fans and mirrors, gay porn stage moves...break all the lame 80's habits,

and played some normal songs and solos instead of nickelodeon cartoon soundtracks.

Again you or I may not like it but I still think it's lame to slag on other players. I think there is enough of that nonsense in the world today with out that stupidity being perpetuated by musicians about other musicians. You can disagree and that's cool...... I just look at it differently.

chilling stuff. no?

as amazing as those kids are, all i see when i watch this is a dark sweat shop and a guy with a whip beating these 3-4 year old kids into perfection.

"keep bouncing and smile--TURN NOW!--too slow! you may not eat today. one bad note and i burn your feet with hot frying pan! no cry-you may not quit..remember what happened to chow lin and his family....panda food!"

not surprised by your pov. makes sense.
i'd be insane to think that some of the stuff i say about vai wouldn't outrage his fans, but i see it like emperor's robe syndrome mixed with butt pat-itis mixed with yes men creating egomaniacs.

i sympathize with your point to a degree and agree there should be encouragement among musicians. if all i did to my guitar students was say you suck they would take up something more fun like sword swallowing instead, but there also needs to be a healthy dose of reality to counteract blind fanaticism or false praise and to correct dumb things.

Much like Hendrix before him, Vai is a poser of epic proportions. Also much like Hendrix, he has the skills to back it up. Love him or hate him, he's one of the "biggest and best" of our times.

Yeah I agree and I think musicians should be honest as well as supportive. Honest crits are good but it sometimes it gets to a point on these forums where players get slammed for just being themselves and having their own voice. I don't get that mentality but that's just way I see it.

sorta understand the connection you are trying to make,
but the chasm between the innovation hendrix pulled off as a black rock guitarist in the 60s, in every aspect of tone, technique, style, and stage presentation,

and what vai does, which is basically fulfill a stereotype, is vast. skilled yes, groundbreaker no. he deserves all the success he receives and i'm happy for him in that regard. jamming with zappa, filling vh, yngwie and sykes's shoes is one tall order and achievements to be proud of.

Vai belongs at a blues festival like Robert Cray should be on Gigantour.

Pete
I thought this at first but on the other hand, Im far from a purist when it comes to the blues and I think that within reason, its way open to interpretation and artistic licence.

The fan part was pretty funny but I would think at this point that Vai would have that a fan patch on his pedalboard so he wouldnt have to summon a roadie to turn it on...

Pat, I cant unsee that damn photo of Richard Simmons!!!!

his mic is actually a extra large lip gloss dispenser
