[he made vai look like abraham lincoln

LOL!

I think Vai needs to sell a pedal that allows you to vary the speed of your fan.

Your definition of groundbreaker must be different then mine Pat.

His JEM was ground breaking for a production guitar and the offspring, the RG series, is the 2nd highest selling guitar in history behind the strat.

He brought the 7 string into the mainstream and to the radio.

Anyways this concludes this month's crucifixion of Vai by Mentoneman, please drive home safe everyone

Much like Hendrix before him, Vai is a poser of epic proportions. Also much like Hendrix, he has the skills to back it up. Love him or hate him, he's one of the "biggest and best" of our times.

sorta understand the connection you are trying to make,
but the chasm between the innovation hendrix pulled off as a black rock guitarist in the 60s, in every aspect of tone, technique, style, and stage presentation,

and what vai does, which is basically fulfill a stereotype, is vast. skilled yes, groundbreaker no. he deserves all the success he receives and i'm happy for him in that regard. jamming with zappa, filling vh, yngwie and sykes's shoes is one tall order and achievements to be proud of.
Can you name another player who used a fan to such great effect? Didn't think so...

I still like Vai, but of the guitar gods to arise from the 80s, Joe Satriani won me over long term.

That said, I wouldn't complain if I had Vai's career. He writes what he wants to and has a fan base to support it. What more could a guitarist want?

Am I the only one wanting to smack Vai in the face with a shovel for all the fake moves/facial expressions?

Does he always do this or is this his way of acting like he's a blues player?

I agree w/ you 100% here.

I actually read some of your post in this thread and thought to myself "when did I write this" b/c the opinions are so spot on with mine. I realized I didn't write them when I got to the parts where you said you saw Vai live on this and that tour etc. :D .

Awesome thread!

I hope that he would never stop posting but IMHO I personally don't respect people who talk shit about their peers. Sorry but I don't.
Kinda like you did in the Morello thread?

Thanks hombre!

Took me a long time to come around with Vai, but I think he's great, a one-off. I ignore the fan, the faces, ect. As long as he's not in a blues jam setting I enjoy most of what he does.
Silly comparing him to VH. Wanna compare Vai to VH, where's EVH's solo recocords? The guy does what he wants and people like it.

As to Graham Bonnett, I saw him in 1980 killing it with Rainbow. He goes over the top alot but he's on some great records, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz....

Was just thinking the same :D .

I do think Steve Vai is an awesome player and all that, he just does very little to my musical soul (love that expression thx mr. Chubtone! ).

Cheers ya'll!

EVH never made a solo record and likely never will. You can call any VH album a solo effort but it really isn't, IMO. He's playing guitar on it.

Vai writes everything, oversees his projects, etc. EVH wouldn't have been able to cut the Zappa gig, IMO

Could be but this is just glaring hypocrisy.
