Took me a long time to come around with Vai, but I think he's great, a one-off. I ignore the fan, the faces, ect. As long as he's not in a blues jam setting I enjoy most of what he does.
Silly comparing him to VH. Wanna compare Vai to VH, where's EVH's solo recocords? The guy does what he wants and people like it.

As to Graham Bonnett, I saw him in 1980 killing it with Rainbow. He goes over the top alot but he's on some great records, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz....

i can listen to the music and enjoy some of it. i just cannot watch the guy in concert. it ruins it for me as he becomes liza minelli.
he seems nice in interviews and when he talks to his fans etc.

bonnett....NO WAY. i saw him in 84 with alcatrazz/yngwie and all i wanted to do was jam his mic down his throat to make him stop. yngwie would run by and play a line that just destroyed me, then gram crackers would start screaming hiroshima or jet to jet and it was like biting a rotten grapefruit.
i resent him so deeply for the countless hours i had to endure his chortling to cop yngwie licks off the alcatrazz albums. i don't think i ever listened to disturbing the peace all the way through.

bonnett music-directing vai. my dream come true. :scared:

imagine dio on those alcatrazz albums instead....sigh....

Every Van Halen album is an EVH solo record....

EVH never made a solo record and likely never will. You can call any VH album a solo effort but it really isn't, IMO. He's playing guitar on it.

Vai writes everything, oversees his projects, etc. EVH wouldn't have been able to cut the Zappa gig, IMO

that's like saying hendrix was just playing the guitar on his records. satch, vai, johnson, all get to ride down the street hendrix and vh paved.
you're right about vh/zappa. he couldn't have done that gig, but vh is so much more popular than zappa.

and that video was pretty watchable because the director rarely showed vai's faces and vai seemed pretty preoccupied with playing at that tempo instead of the slow stuff where according to his facial expressions he just has coitus with his monkey grip.

but his playing on that tune exemplifies the same old devices he always used like a bag of tricks which i don't find interesting. whammy bar, octaves, tapping, uninteresting tone, poor finger vibrato, a string of ideas that are sorta slapped together instead of a cohesive thought.
i don't get it or connect to him at all musically but i'm happy for those that do enjoy his playing.

LOL in 1980 I saw Graham Bonnet and Roger Glover at an in-store appearence before the Rainbow show later that night.
Bonnett was pasty white, probably make-up. He looked like James dean after the morgue got him ready for viewing

I was a Vai fan early on and still am. However, I find his stuff less appealing now than I did before.

Comparing him to Eddie is indeed silly. The two come from completely different backgrounds. Vai is an educated musician, that plays guitar. Eddie is guitar player, that rewrote the guitar playing book (and plays some fine piano as well). Vai is a more technical player. Eddie shocked the world. When Vai dies, it will be known among the community. When Eddie dies, it will be on the news.

I love what Vai has accomplished for himself, and he deserves it. He has a fan base that supports his writing what he wants to. Any guitarist should LOVE to be in that position. I would. Eddie, on the other hand, made stars of his band members, on his back. VH without Eddie is like pizza without, well, pizza.

As for an Eddie solo record....I would LOVE one. It's not his gig and that's too bad. Every VH cd I've ever bought was done so with the primary purpose of listening to Eddie. "Baluchitherium" is a compositional instrumental and holds its own compared to the more instrumental geared guitarists.

I dig Vai. I like Eddie's and Satches stuff more. At the end of day, I want to go back and listen to their songs more than I want to go back and listen to Vai's stuff. It's all a matter or personal tastes.

Amen brother.

Lots of more technical, more educated players have come and gone before and since Hendrix or EVH. None of them changed the way guitar was viewed either.

At least you only had to cop one lick to sound like exactly Yngwie for the rest of your life. :D

I hope that he would never stop posting but IMHO I personally don't respect people who talk shit about their peers. Sorry but I don't.

the fact that blue bonnett sung with blackmore, yngwie, schenker, vai....unbelievable! does he sneak backstage and chloroform those cats after attending their gigs and make them sign contracts unbeknownst to them?

impelliterri-now that i get--them two are a match made in pakistan. what a pile of coat hangars!
:D

Vai is unbelievable live!!!   Well he was when I last saw him and that was in 2007. I am thinking of going to see him in Chicago in September.
