Do you hear only pedal tone when boosting? Or, just a better version of the amp boosted?

You also don't, last I checked, use high gain amps. Racerxrated is sensitive and starting threads about it because I laugh at people who go buy a high gain amp only to mod it or put a cheap diode boost in front of it.
I've never owned a legit channel switching amp or gigged anything with a gain knob (ok well I did use a backline provided "Twin-Amp" in Chicago recently). I know Racerxrated has a couple vintage amps including a Twin so I didn't consider the high gain parameter when I posted.

You are going to have a lot of people to laugh at.

Modding an amp isn't always for higher gain. There is voicing and other circuit changes that have nothing to do with gain addition.

Boosting a high gain amp isn't a dirty word. If it improves the tone, you do it. If it tightens a loose high gain amp, it is very good.

But to be honest. I don't think your humor is going to bother many people

That seems to be what he got all excited about. I have never objected to people running gain boxes into low gain amps (or amps set low gain). And the results are unquestionably affected by the sound of the box, and that's OK - buy a cool sounding box and go ape. I like the Radial Plexitube with backline myself.

But if you're going to buy an amp designed for high gain, and don't like it's high gain tone and have to start modding, boosting, EQing, etc. I'm going to question WTF you're doing.

As far as I can tell it's bothering exactly one person, but given how much he's posted about it, well, he seems to be VERY bothered.
Sure. I think more than anything, Racer is a good guy and probably is more concerned that you know how to clean boost an amp. If you don't like it better, no big deal.

A lot of times, when people complain about diodes, it is new guys that think that it somehow tarnishes the purity of a tube amp.

A high gain amp sounds like garbage when you use the distortion/gain side of a diode pedal. With the level side, it tightens an amp and enhances the high end especially for recording.

I have had many high gain amps. And i have clean boosted a good few. And I always try it on an amp to see if it is improved, because I am going to do whatever it takes to get the best sound out of an amp.

Could do with a few more options. I like ODs for sure. On some amps I definitely “hear” them more. But it is usually worth it. Sometimes Iike a boost, sometimes I don’t.

I don’t get the issue with sticking a boost in front of an amp just because it is “expensive” or “high gain”. Is it wrong that Porsche add a rear wing?

It depends on the amp and the pedal.

It's not one or the other so I can't answer the poll question.

If I tried to boost the larry I could only hear the pedal; if I boost a rectifier I generally hear a better version of a rectifier, if I boost a marshall I generally hear both.

There are many amps where boosting is a good idea and the only reasonable way to get certain tones

There are many amps where you can get usable tones boosted, and usable tones without it

There are many amps where you don't need a boost at all, and boosting it tends to make it sound worse

I do know how to turn both the level and gain knobs on a boost

And I really don't have any objection to diode clipping, whether it be in a box or late in the circuit like a Jose mod. I just suggest people be honest about what they're hearing.

So you actually use the Plexitube for a main sound? That has to be one of the shittiest overpriced Marshall in a box pedals ever made. And then you rag on real Marshalls while using that MG Marshall in a box? I did Nazi this coming from boost Hitler.

The Plexitube sounds just fine. I detect user error, or just poor personal taste, on your part  It has an excellent range of EQ options specifically for use with backline which is the application here.

I naturally question what people with no gigs, no band, no recordings, and no intention of doing any of those things are doing with a room full of gear. It seems pretty routine here to see guys post pics of a room with 50-100k+ worth of gear in it. Well, it's their money, their business. I'm not sure what good will come from ball breaking another member over their choice to boost a high gain amp. It just doesn't mean jack to me I guess.
