Does anybody ever get into this rut when playing

I think I've picked up a guitar once or twice, in the last year. I haven't played like I meant it, in much longer; when I get bored, I don't bother, until I feel I HAVE to play.

Take a break, or find something to challenge yourself, musically.

I've always been a fan of really fast technical playing, because I can't do it lol. I can fake it a bit, but I know my limitations. That said, what I do play with some success is bluesy rock...so for me I put in a Kingsx disc or maybe Gary Moore 'Still got the Blues' and just jam along. Or maybe some Floyd...improv along with songs lets me feel the music and come up with some interesting phrases. But I've always got some shred of some type keyed up on my Zune in the car...I'm with a lot of you when it comes to plugging in first and playing the same old riffs, same warm up routine for the last 25 years...

I often do. I've just been too busy with other things, that whenever I do get a chance to play I just play the same stuff over and over again.

Playing with other people definitely helps to get out of that rut though, as you're challenged to be better. It's a bit of friendly competition to improve.
