these may help....i've put the markers in just in case you don't have much time. there's so much feeling , emotion , groove and aggressiveness - and he was the first of his kind....it's called evolution...after him came yngwie , paul gilbert , warren demartini , lynch , reb beach , vai...the list goes on. now we have pete thorn , andy james , andy wood , martin miller , guthrie...etc.. he's inspired ALL the greats we love to listen to now. hope you enjoy as they are master pieces.

I didn't get EVH to until recently. I loved the songs, but Ed's lead playing didn't do it for me. Then one day, his phrasing and sense of time/rhythm just clicked with me. His playing is so loose and relaxed, but the riffs come out mean and aggressive. Now he's one of my favourite players.

For a sight sense get Live Without a Net on DVD. 1986

Ed is ON and is this was the tour that was running around the same time as DLR and Vai and he had something to prove.

No missed notes, blazing on a shitbox guitar and a plexi.

So which VH album you guys recommend I buy first?

Well you should shell out around $60 and get all six of the DLR-era CDs - make sure they are the Classic Remasters - they have been re-equalized/normalized and they sound fantastic. Set aside several hours and listen to them in order, from VHI through to 1984. Pay attention to how the sound of his rig changes, and also to the subtle changes to his playing over time.

I have been listening for 34 years, and I am still astounded by EVH, and the greatness of the band (even DLR!!!). They were perfect for the times.

Here's a taste off "Live without a net", outstanding tones and perfermance all round. If you don't get THIS there's no hope my friend!

Fair Warning
Yep...and I'll get flamed for this, but 1984 is really under rated IMO.
Nuh other than the 2 keyboard tunes that' a bitchen album.
Yeah, like that bluesy breakdown after the solo in House of Pain?? Man those guys were bringin' it! Not only Ed, but Al and Roth too.

This is a bit off topic but I always thought that DLR wasn't that great of a singer and was just more of a personality/frontman. Then I heard Doug Pinnick of Kings X (my all time favorite singer) sing "Light Up The Sky" on a VH tribute album and was left thinking that Roth was a bad ass because Pinnick as great as he is didn't really do the song justice, and that floored me.

When in doubt, bring Johnson out.

His tone on Live Without A Net is just awesome. It's the perfect mix of plexi and a little bit of grease from the Eventide and delays. It has to be one of my all time favorite guitar tones.

His solos got old to me after a while, but there is no one on the planet who's sense of rhythm playing and riffs had more of an influence on me. He was the definition (at the time) of a controlled demolition, rhythmically speaking.

That video of "Hear About It Later" actually made me kind of sad, considering what he's reduced himself to at this stage in his life. "Unchained" was THE bad ass riff that kicked me into playing.

That outro groove is one of my favorite guitar riffs ever. 1984 is probably my favorite EVH cd. IMO, Eddie's peak in his oneness with a guitar.

As another reference from 1984....

Just some cool rhythm work and I love the solo. It's just another example of how Eddie pulls something out of his ass to get it done.
