I played a Mexi made DK24 at RiffCity a couple weeks ago, and thought the neck was great. I wasn't looking to spend nearly a grand on a guitar at the time, but I did buy a used Pro Mod San Dimas off the local CL a few days later as a birthday present for myself. :)

I want another. :0
About 5-6 yrs back when they first went to MiM I tried one at a Music go Round in the twin cities....yuck. Way behind the USA or MiJ pro mods, felt like a cheap imitation. But the recent production stuff has been much better I've heard.
I'm blown away by my 09 SoCal every time I pick it up. Just the most comfortable and easiest playing guitar I've ever played, and that includes 3 Charvel Customs, 2 TAs and 3 Suhrs. I'd put it on par with a friend's pre pro that he'll never sell lol...

I wouldn't mind playing a couple US made Charvels and just see how different/better they might feel. I've owned 4 electric guitars in my life, and they've either been made in Mexico or Korea. Aside from the Charvel I just got, I've been playing an Epiphone '67 Flying V for the past ~18 years. I very briefly owned an Ibanez Prestige S2075 about ~10-12 years ago. When I used to spend $$$ on gear, it was usually amps.

I'm with you on the amp...I'm just fine with a 5-700$ guitar. But the amp is the most important link in the chain for me. My Charvel was 650 used, in great shape. Just a year ago on GC.com. Now, the USA 08-09 are 1K if you can find them. I also have an Edwards Sykes, 450 shipped from Japan. Really nice LP clone, akin to an LP standard or traditional. I never found much of a difference playability wise with a fancy custom shop Suhr or other vs a lower range guitar. Sure, they have a lot of exotic woods and fancy tops, but do they sound/play better than a lower range non custom shop guitar? I didn't find that to be the case. Very nice guitars but I'd rather put 2-3k into an amp than a guitar.

Check out the Chubtone...seriously.
How long is the wait nowadays? I messaged him a year ago on a simple 1 hum vintage type build, and I never heard back. But he was busy, just getting going I bet. Curt's good people.

4-5 months, $500 down, total around 1500. Best neck ever IMO. Just perfect. Great build quality, fit and finish, fretwork, all top notch.

I have been hearing the same about MIM from reputable guys so I went ahead with the pre order on the 1888. Will be a long wait for me but I will certainly post up when I get it.

Regarding Chubtone, I have been looking for a long time and have wanted one really bad. Some of them look killer and maybe one day but I tend to lean on the 0% payment plan purchased from Sweetwater or MF and a lot of these guys do not use dealers so I have to just save up.

Nice. Great price for a custom shop guitar.

I was at Riff City again today (to get a EHX Soul Food, but came home with a Keeley Caverns), and played on that MIM DK24 I wanted. It still felt great. However, comparing it to the MIM I got on Craigslist, it looks like they cut all the frets too deep and shimmed them? It was like a different color strip of wood the same height as the fret in the fret board. It was weird. Maybe that's not what I think, as I'm not a builder. Also, the routing where the thumb screw is for neck adjustment was not cleaned up very well.
