Is the Aracom attenuator that awesome, or would the HotPlate

I'm leaning towards HotPlate myself after reading this thread and others elsewhere. I also have the 1987x but really only need a little reduction as I CAN and do crank it, just wan't to tame the volume a touch and it's sounding like the HotPlate at minimal to -8db settings is fine for that, solid bang for buck anyway.

Cool! Yesterday I was a hack, yet today I am an Apprentice NOOB! I'm moving up!

With the Alex (and probably any attenuator), you simply need to match the amp's output impedance to the attentuator, not the speaker. I run the 8ohm version which is what I typically need (2x16ohm cabs) but I also use it with one 16ohm cab as well as one 4ohm cab...works great. The impedance mismatch does have an affect on tone but it's not drastic. I checked this out with Alex himself before I did it.

How could we stay mad at you? You had me at hello.

Fusionbear: is the Phantom $700 better than the HotPlate? The Phantom now retails for a little over a grand (with shipping) as of 1/1.

Well, I got mine when it was much cheaper. I own SN#2. I think I would build my own at this point rather than pay that much money. Might not be as pretty on the outside, but I understand the circuit...

One tip is when you get WAY down in volume to bedroom/TV levels, speakers with much smaller magnets and even stereo speakers with tweeter disengaged often sound much better.

When you throw 1/4 of a Watt or less at a 4-12 Cab- the speakers are saying "what is that ?".
