John Mayer’s insane EVH rig

It's that way with the weight of any tube amp; unless you've got injuries or whatever there really isn't any excuse, because by the time youre too old to carry around a decent size tube rig (I.E. a twin/decent sized combo, head plus 2x12) you probably shouldn't be gigging at all anymore if that's too much for you. How the fuck are you gonna help the drummer load his kick drum or 100lb cymbal case in if you can't fucking carry a hot rod deluxe?

That's obviously a different situation if you have a back injury or whatever, but in a normal situation there's just very little excuse for it besides being lazy and being a bitch lol
I kind of like loading the heavy gear. It focuses the mind and tells you on a subconscious level that you are there to do something important.

You seem to ascribe deep emotion to obvious hyperbole constantly - it isn't a meaningful contribution to any type of conversation
I get it, it's just on every thread you seem about to commit hari-kari due to someone's mild difference in preference. I like you and want you to be happy, and I worry about your blood pressure. Take it easy bro.

It just seems like musicians are constantly searching for a reason to be as lazy as humanly possible, at all points in time and for any reason you can make an excuse for

Whether it's "WAHHHHH MY FENDER IS 8 WHOLE POUNDS"

Or "WAHHHH I DON'T LIKE CARRYING A WHOLE GUITAR AMP 50 FEET FROM THE VAN TO THE STAGE"

It's a constant wail of people complaining about the most minor inconveniences imaginable. It's barely an inconvenience at all. Like jesus christ man, I can't imagine being in a band with someone who demands to use a quilter and a neo-neo-FRFR weightless cab or some shit, and then the drummer needs help loading his drums offstage, or the PA needs to be taken down.

What then? Does the grab-n-go warrior lament about how heavy that shit is? They will *gasp* have to do a tiny amount of physical labor? At a GIG? The scandal.

50 feet is pretty much the limit for hand toting a Twin without a cart.

But for real, moving the gear is probably the least hassle part of gigging with a band and the PA is generally a helluva lot more hassle than an amp and a few pedals.

That's one of those things that lives in different universes depending on whether you do originals or covers

The PA is always supplied by the venue/promoter at original gigs, unless its a party in the woods or some bullshit. So at least for original bands, that's not really an issue at least in the sort of dive bars, small theaters, punk and metal venues I play. Honestly most original bands here have PAs just in case - they charge insane fees if the venue doesn't provide one. Because obviously its 4 times as much work to set up everything, run sound and play at the same time etc.

For cover bands though, it's 1000% an issue. Generally you're getting paid a lot more money, and the PA is assumed to be provided by the band.

Most of the venues I'm playing here have a P.A and sound man. Certain venues I told them they can pay me more money and tell their soundman to stay home because I'm not paying a moron to run sound "hey can you face your amp sideways" and stupid stuff like that. Other venues have a PA but it's antique board/power amp/speakers and not something I wanna sink time into figuring out so I just bring my own.

I'm just glad the silent stage thing hasn't caught on in the sort of venues i play yet - I will know its truly time to pack it in at that point

I'm on board with you 100% on that. Absolutely no way and absolutely no compromises. Honestly I think if any genres are gonna hold the line against that it will be punk rock and blues music. It's kind of the nature of those two genres to be d.i.y and to hold more tightly to old school methods. I've never met anyone who runs direct in blues, it's not acceptable to the people in the business. Blues is guitar+amp+feeling. Punk strikes me as very similar in that regard.

Have to keep this in mind when people discuss their guitar preferences, too

When people complain about les paul weight or baseball necks I laugh - like im sure @tallcoolone or other tall guys do. Yes maybe for the short kings a les paul is heavy or the neck is big, but for us big guys it's actually quite comfortable

I love wolfgangs, but I would never buy one or play one live as they are tiny and look like toy guitars
When I play a wolfgang it looks like I am holding a teaspoon with strings on it lmao

Yep, I remember trying one at a local music store in high school and all my homies laughing their asses off

I was so confused "what's so funny?"

"You look like bigfoot playing a ukelele"

Nothing makes me feel as stupid as when i am playing a guitar that looks like a kid's guitar. Even my rhoads looks kinda small on me. But i think it's fine.

And the weight of a guitar thing kills me. I have played a lot of guitars and never once thought one felt heavy.... That is fucking insane to me

The only guitar I've ever picked up and thought "wow that's a little heavy" was an acrylic warlock, but even then it wasn't THAT much worse than a norlin les paul - i believe it was like 14.5 pounds

If I was dead set on playing one I would just get a padded strap

Can you imagine bitching about a guitar weighing 8 fucking pounds? That's inconceivable to me

I cannot fathom being such a fucking weak sister that an 8 pound guitar is just too much for my soylent arms to handle - at that point you are probably severely disabled and shouldn't be playing guitar standing up anyways.

And good news! If you only play sitting down, it doesn't fucking matter how much it weighs!

Bro I have listened to guys complain about the edge of the guitar "digging into my leg" when seated.

Tell them to get a strandberg or whatever i guess? Aren't those headless abominations supposed to be "ergonomic" or whatever gay shit?

or even better, tell them to quit playing guitar :hys:

A lot of us play standing, even bedroom guitarists. Dont get me wrong, i see nothing wrong with sitting if that is your thing. But it feels stange to me to play loud metal sitting down, ha.

But anyway, me and @RedB4Black have damn near an identical guitar strap and seem to be the only bedroom guitarists on rig-talk that stand up and play. He made a joke at the last amp fest about the other dudes sitting down...something about asking if they sat down to pee also

I always play a acoustic sitting down because i have never had one with a strap. But my v isnt the most comfortable in the world to play sitting...but nothing digs into my leg

I always heard the warlock was really heavy. When i was thinking of buying my first guitar, that one appealed to me, but my buddy told me they were way too heavy and built like shit. So i always avoided them.

I would like to try one now, to see if it bothered me playing one standing
