Favorite recorded EVH tone - VH1, VH2 and Fair Warning.
Favorite live EVH tone - VHIII. Was slamming on this tour.

Should have been a hit single VH song - Secrets from Diver Down.

Album that desperately needs to be remixed- ADKOT. I've been jamming the heck out of this for weeks and it's some of my favorite playing by Ed. Zero doubt that Eddie played with more fire with Roth. This album, Me Wise Magic etc... he just dug in more with Roth. Maybe it was the approach he had to take vs the music with Hagar.

Such a cool vibe on this tune, good solo as well...

Love this song, fantastic bridge section and a great solo by Ed. Put Mike on those high harmonies and remix this whole thing.

I know Nuno had this on continuous play...my favorite solo by Ed.

The correct answer is (imho) in the studio around 1978-79. Dialed in, recorded right, controlled environment. Truth is, live was kind of a crap shoot with him.... studio was always a chefs kiss in those early years.

I liked all Ed's sounds and I appreciated the evolution of his tone back then. Every record sounded a little different to me and it seemed like he was changing things up at times. He always talked about using his Marshall, but he used different effects and guitars at times. I loved that and thought it was cool (as a kid and even now). We do not have that anymore. His later era stuff got more polished and less raw and for some that is a deal breaker but I think the tone on 5150 is absolutely glorious. It sounds like Summer to me.

The tone I thought sucked was Different Kind of Truth. Flat and boring like he did it on a Line 6 POD. No depth or live feeling to it. Of course it was a throw away record full of covers of their earlier demos (which were way better to me). It is not like they put a bunch of time into it.

I guess OU812 could have been recorded or mixed better for sure but I listen to it now and I still like it.

Fair Warning is still probably my fav tone though

I definitely agree about OU812. The recording is not good, but the songs are. I agree with the whole post, really. Fair Warning is the high water mark, and ADKOT the low.

I think more love needs to be given to his choice of footwear and the toe jam era.

I’m partial to Fair Warning but the first six albums are all great. I’m not crazy about his rhythm tones during the Hagar years, but I still quite like his lead tones and playing.

Other than Tattoo the whole album is a sonic mess. The mix, there's no separation between anything it's like this giant mono mess they tried to put in stereo. I know John Shanks was involved and I'm not a fan of anything he's done. And on this album and III Ed was very into no eq or very little processing from the board etc... basically just get it all from the mics and that's it. In fact the drums are all from the overheads even though the whole kit was mic'ed up. And it sounds like it.

That said, if you can get past that, most of the tracks are great and Ed plays his ass off. Wolfe plays great, Alex plays great and Dave is even decent most of the time considering how far his voice fell off.

I would love for Wolf or someone to completely remix that album one day because it's all there.

I'm with ya' on this. Ed somehow got hooked up with Ross Hogarth for tracking (who really pushes Royer Ribbon mics) definitely made it feel like a castrated version of the sound ED was famous for. sad how things can change when, you use a "better mic".
