Yes I know VH1–1984 is iconic, but the sellout Van Hagar era straight up sounds better lol. Better tones, better mixes, arguably tighter playing too.

Me too, I wish they gave it one more try. I get the feeling that they needed a little more time to gel.

The rig as used on LWOAN is probably my favourite. The sounds from WACF to Diver Down were my favourite on records, but its hard to know what was what there.

For that matter, what was his rig on LWAN? It sounded fantastic and nothing like the tone on 5150. I'm assuming it was a bunch of NMV 100w Marshalls. But was he using the Eventide on the tour?

This particular era, for me, is probably where I see Ed at the height of his playing. There’s some bootlegs from this tour where he’s just killing it and the energy is insane, like this brief period where getting those guitars and amps were like him getting an F1 car and his own track.

The tone on Live: Right Here Right Now were always my favorite of Ed's tones. I know Sammy has stated that it was not a "real" live album since Ed basically went back in and re-recorded all the guitar tracks in the studio, and not even in the same tuning, so Sammy had to go back and resing the entire show because he was no longer in tune with the instruments.
Always assumed it was the 5150 prototypes that he has been using on that entire tour and rack rig full of SDE-3's and Eventides, but since it was in the studio, I guess it was just whatever he thought sounded best that day.

Love all of Ed's tones until VH III. May personal favorite is the FUCK album tones. And I drool over the tones on Live: Right Here Right Now. That tone I have actually tried to chase. At lease in a mono format. lol

Ed’s tone/sound on the first 6 VH albums was, and still is, fantastically inspiring.
His sound post-“1984” didn’t do much for me.
Having said that, without Ed and the Peavey 5150, modern metal would sound very different.
Gotta give mad props to EVH for his work to get the 5150 into the hands of us normal musician people.
