Kings X live at NAMM - damn that Egnater sounds GOOD!!

I caught their second set at NAMM.....man, those guys are just so good!

I agree about the mix in the room....Dug could have used some reverb on his vocals for sure. I guess if they were going for the actual sound of the PA, straight without going effect crazy, then they did that....but still, there could have been some embellishments to get a great live sound.

Mackie was actually recording the whole set and letting people mix it afterwards themselves. That would have been cool to do, but I was too eager to roam NAMM.

Friday night I caught the Dean NAMM jam. Dug was there, just hangin' out right next to my girl and I for HellYeah's set. Really nice guy and I was stoked to share a few drinks with him! (Dug like Long Islands, so if ya ever wanna get him a drink...).

Jerry is killing his cymbals.. Why does he hate them so?
I cant hear much in that mix, hard to tell how it sounds unless nothing else is playing.
Its probably safe to say he sounded great, he always does... Everytime I've seen them
Well, I never heard his live POD tone, but I can live with that :D

Wonder how Doug gets that bowel-moving, snarling, high gain bass tone? You know, the one you CANT hear in the vid

re: Jerry's drumming...like I said above, almost wants to make me quit guitar and start playing drums. I love watching him live..I never knew he was so crazy, till I saw them open for Dio a few years ago.

my thought too

needed small room verb on voc and more sub on bass, and e-gtr louder.

my first time seeing the band--what is the thing the fans love most about them?
I'm not sure they're my cup of tea

Heavy beatle-esque power pop w/ funk twist and the most soulful singer around

1st album through dogman
all have some cool examples of this

I bought dogman when it came out
lots of my friends love them

didnt get it then--just not my thing I guess

Twelve-string bass and one clean and one drrrrty amp? :D
(Dunno about the amp situation, but I also play bass, and mixing a clean signal with low end, and an overdriven with more high end sounds like a monster:))

clean signal into a 32 band with all the lows shelved. Another clean signal with the amptweaker tight drive for bass into a 32 band with all the highs shelved into a svt power amp into 4 SVT 8x10 cabs and then use a 12 string! Sounds like a grand piano with all the keys being hit at one time into a full on pa!

Hhhmmmm..... an amptweaker tight drive for bass? I will go and do some digging, thank you sir :D

Ya I took dUg to play it at James booth at the Dallas show and he loved it. Got the distortion he really wanted so he could just run clean and then hit the pedal for his rauchy tone!

Doug is one of the very few singers on earth that can sound absolutely amazing with no effects, 100% totally dry. Super cool Jay Phebus, their FOH engineer, rarely puts anything on Doug's vocal, other than maybe a tiny bit of verb to mimic the natural verb of the venue. I learned the trick from him personally back in '99 and I rarely get a chance to use it because not many singers can sing that dry.

Damon Johnson of Brother Cane is another guy that sounds amazing when totally dry.

You got it spot on!

He really did, I mean, HE WROTE A SONG ABOUT IT   That looks like a really cool bass overdrive, I've been looking for something like that for awhile, but everything I've tried sounds terrible. I'd never heard of those
That may just be the ticket
So let me be sure I'm clear on this, he's only running the AT pedal on the lows, and the highs are more or less clean, right?
Kind of a biamped system with no crossover, just shelving what he doesent want to come through each SVT?
Thats a cool idea
Thanks Jeff, YOU DA MAN

I hope this doesnt sound stupid, because a lot of you guys are getting into the technicalities of mixing and whatnot, but King's X is not exactly a band with tons of money invested in their stage performance. Although I'm a huge fan, I've only seen them live twice and each time they basically played on a stage that was barely big enough to hold the three of them and their equipment wasn't exactly on the same scale as Rush!, yet it kinda sounds like were nitpicking a NAMM performance over a mix that could have used +3db on Ty's vocals. C'mon! this is rock and roll by some old guys!

Anyone know if those are stock cabs with v30's?

Yes, those are the stock cabs. I brought them from our booth for the performances.

Cool! Maybe you could share his settings?

My old band, Sea Of Souls, played TONs of gigs with Kings X. They are friends, and amazing musicians! Ty always has tone!
