Rush and Metallica are similar in that they have done what they wanted, put out the music they wanted and reached multiple generations of fans. They survived the epidemic called grunge that killed off many bands. I respect that.
Being a sellout would be not growing, not evolving, and not doing new things. Staying the same for 30 years would normally be considered being in a rut. Funny double standard. Here is your box, stay in it bitches...

I'm super happy they did those albums. Staples in my rotation for a long time now. If they just eliminated the half dozen weakest songs and did a long single album, would have been more epic.

After revisiting this old thread, sure Metallica ain't the same band....they're pushing 50. Do I really expect them to sound like Ride The Lightening again? It's unrealistic if I do. And with money and success their lifestyles changed so maybe we'd still call them posuers if they were writing pissed off angry music while they sample wine & cheese after playing a round of golf.
But the fact is, anything they release will sell no matter how bad/good it is because of who they are. However, they built that history so they do deserve what they get from building that franchise.
And with the way the industry is with rock n roll seeming more unpopular than ever I actually hope Metallica keeps selling out arenas. Rock/metal will take a hit when Metallica goes away.

I said IN MY OPINION, they are terrible now and should hang it up. It's always been my opinion that when an artist has nothing left to offer, they should quit to preserve their legacy. Metallica obviously don't care about that and they know they can always sell records so more power to em. Again, just my opinion.

They are heavy.Ain´t my bitch is fun play just like The Outlaw torn.Fixxxer is great.
96 was the best year.The attitude the sound.Hetfields voice was gigantic at this time.Just listen to these two songs.

I really like Load and ReLoad. I think the reason I still like Metallica is because of their diversity. I hate bands that get a formula and rehash album after album of the same sounding stuff. IMO they also got tired of thrash and wanted to experiment. The bluesy hard rock style of Load and ReLoad suit them well. I personally wouldn't mind seeing them go back to that bluesy hard rock style now over trying to force a fast heavy album. Death Magnetic was a good album IMO but the production killed it for me. If they could get back to good production with a solid album I would be happy.

I have listened to a ton of live metallica through the years (and i mean a ton) and my opinion is that 96 was the best year.
Seattle 1989 is awesome to.Just listen to battery around 02:40 after the solo.Freaking fast and precise.
But as i mentioned before the attitude,sound and aggression they had around load is unf...ingbelievable.

Give me a break. Testament, Megadeth and Exodus all have their musical chops intact. Metallica doesn't. No excuse.

I've bought plenty of Metallica CDs & been to several of their concerts, so I've pumped plenty of money into the Metallica machine. Thats my ticket to criticize all I want. If a chef overcooks and burns my food, can I not complain about that ?

IMO yes Lars and Kirk especially need to step up their games but considering Lars has never been a great drummer and now has shoulder issues and Kirk has hand/carpel tunnel issues there are some factors.

I can see what you are saying but they will never make another MOP, RTL, etc.... They just don't have that youth and anger anymore. They have families, have matured with age and are fairly content in their lives now. Those things influence how and what you write and play even if you try not to let them. I personally still think they can make some great music. I just think the only way people will enjoy it though is to take it for what it is instead of comparing it to what they did on their first 4 albums over 20 years ago.

"Outlaw Torn" is easily my favorite Metallica song of all time. I've got a big connection to the lyrics, so that's definitely a factor.
I was born in 82' and even though I was raised on Queensryche from that age, Metallica never got much play in my house. Took me a while to get into them on my own. I had only been playing a couple years when I saw the video for "Until It Sleeps" and I just dug all the sounds I was hearing. The clean guitar part, the tone of the solo, the vocal layering. Of course, I knew of them by that point, but that's what made me listen to them and buy the records.
So it's easy for me to enjoy those two records, I had no predisposed notion of what they 'should' have sounded like. I just heard songs that got stuck in my head, they were heavy and there was some interesting sounds. By the time high school hit, I was a full on fan of the older stuff and didn't listen to Load/Reload for a long time, but that's cuz I was catching up on the old stuff.
And shit, it's not like they turned into Queensryche and put crap that embarrassing out or go on a fuckin' cabaret tour, they just keep finding more shit to blow up live.
Saw them on the DM tour in Boston and they were fucking GREAT. Don't see many audiences worked up in that kind of a frenzy these days. That in itself says something about their live performance.

The Phillips Arena was so jam packed full of screaming fans when they played Sad But True.. You could not hear the band. Insane fans. Awesome to see so many people at a rock/metal concert. Not at rap or dub step...
But for them to not play what they want to play, not try out the blues metal they wanted to... To continue playing thrash because someone else wanted them to is the exact definition of selling out. I like Outlaw Torn, Carpe Diem Baby, Devils Dance, 2x4.. Lots of cool stuff.
Seems like no matter what comes out new, somebody will like the old one better, and slag the new...
