Metallica just announced new album in November...

Middle of the road for me. I have to hear the rest of the album since I'm curious what kind of riffs they are throwing around now.

I was never a huge Metallica fan, so take this with a grain of salt. While the opening riff/main riff/only riff is pretty cool and the production of the band sounds modern and is good, the song and their last three albums have just been so meh, it's hard to even give them a listen. As others have said, the vocals are just too dry and his 'singing' since the Load album has really just gotten unbearable. I know that it's easier on his vocal chords to not add the vocal fry, but he just has this nasally thing that is tough to listen too. I think that if they took the time to flesh out ideas and build riffs, they could have something again, but they are too lazy and too past their prime to try.

Agreed , live version sounds pretty good! Solo on the live version was definitely lacking tho!

You have essentially summed up every Metallica show for the last twenty years.

Over the years I've come to believe that James would benefit more from writing songs and guitar parts based around what he's actually capable of actually singing. Being the vocalist of the band, I'd think that might be in the back of his mind, but apparently not. Music wise, the new song isn't THAT bad. I just don't think that James current voice sounds good with this song. Maybe the young Hetfield voice from Kill through AJFA would fit this style music better. I personally love Load and Reload, and James vocal performance on those are amazing in my opinion. Even on Garage Inc he sounded great! But for the last 20 years we've had James with his current, more grown up voice and the music on Load and Reload reflected that. The guy can sing, and when he's writing songs, musically, and thats let grown up James shine through and flow with the music, it sounds great! You would think that the new song would sound like when "grown up" James sings an older song from KEA or MOP, but it doesn't. At least not to me anyway. Just sounds like grown up James singing on some old, quickly put together riffs. I cant judge the whole album off one song, but so far it sounds like DM with slightly better drum sounds. The guitars still sound like crap to me. Maybe slightly better than DM, but still not very good. But whatever, if thats what they think sounds good. I kinda with they would have went with Bob Rock again, and maybe he may have been able to put a little more polish on the sound.

This is much better

Yep....did you also check out the making of video too?

Tone was crushing there, so no idea why we get that dry, brittle/crunchy, balls to the wall limited tone on the album...sounds like a DM reject there.

It's been 8 years
Time is not the issue here lol

Off Topic but : Slayer sounds like well.. Slayer and I dig it but what is with the production on that one? Weak snare! Leads are junk as usual but really uninspired here.

Definitely ok, just nothing to write home about imo. I would prefer to hear more complex, musically challenging stuff. This song is 3 minutes repetitive rhyhtm. Ok, the break is not that bad... but should be developped to more. Hell, even This Was Just Your Life has a more interesting middle part. I guess they are more into radiofriendly easy listening festival sound.
Again, I hope for the rest of the album.

THIS. I just wish they would've put more emphasis on building/expanding this song. But, I suppose they determined it would be a good song for the first single that was straight to the point and would get everyone's attention.

I always thought them and many other metal bands would be much better if they got a better vocalist.

Tone does sound better live and it does remind me of a Slayer-type tune. But that's ok. Decent tune.

It's pretty "meh", we'll see if the album is better. I started listening to those guys when MOP came out. IMHO, they haven't had a real songwriter in the band since they fired Mustaine and Cliff died. The Garage albums were better than their own stuff since Puppets.

I like the song a lot. I was slightly disappointed with the (end of the) guitar solo but there you go. The song also reminds me somewhat of Slayer, but hey, didn´t Metallica start this genre also?

I watched the making of.. agreed that the sound in the studio is much sharper. That is likely just a mix thing UNLESS they Kempered their own amps and then used them later on. I also agree that the end of the solo sounds more like Kirk didn't know what else to do and that was probably one of his better takes so they just used it. It totally pitters out and sounds like he forgot to play more notes. Surprised they didn't notice that?

Not a huge Metallica fan, so from a bit of an objective standpoint -

It's cool how they're going "back to their roots" somewhat and with a better production than the last album it seems, but there's something about a multi-millionaire rockstar, who probably has every comfort in life and has fronted a clothing label recently, singing lyrics like "We're so fucked/shit outta luck". Just seems really weak, lyrically.

Sounds quite Slayer-ish too, I agree, which isn't a bad thing really. Maybe the drums could go down a tad and the guitars could go up, but that's just me nit-picking!

I actually like the song also. Harsh crowd around here but I don't think anything Metallica does now will impress many on these forums. These days most seem to go in looking for something to dislike more than anything else.

I would almost put money on if MOP wasn't released back in the day and they released it today it would be getting nitpicked to death.

It's just virtually impossible for them to live up to their past regardless of what they do now. Their past success is just so huge.

When Hetfield sings "We're so fucked, shit out of luck" I don't think he's talking anything about himself or the band mebers. The lyrics seem about what's going on in the world today. And right now those lyrics seem pretty accurate. The world is pretty fucked and the human race as a whole does seem hardwired to self destruct.
