Not a big Vai fan but I always liked this album

What great memories that album holds for me...it came out summer of 1986 and I was 13, bought it on tape so I could play it through my ghetto blaster or Walkman and then those videos with the Picasso Brothers were on heavy rotation on MTV. Great times those were.

I know there's a lot of Tesla hate here, but Mechanical Resonance was a killer album & those dudes killed it too.

Vai, Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch are largely responsible for me mutilating the guitar for the past few decades!

Just incredible. This was one of those 'guitar' albums that I just literally lived with for about a year - and then it still remained in steady rotation. I totally agree with you guys - this album had catchy enough riffs and melodies that you just loved listening to it and Vai had just enough room to work to put his stamp on everything. I 'liked' Skyscraper - but I loved Eat 'Em. Skyscraper sometimes felt a bit like a Vai Solo album with lyrics. Eat 'Em felt more like a rock band.

Yes agree, also a good example to me of the fact I usually much prefer "guitar hero" work in the context & framework of a full band, being part of a "whole" with special chemistry happening & supporting great songs.

Flexable/Alcatrazz/PIL/Epidemics/DLR era Vai holds a special place in my musical influences.
The Bisonette/Sheehan/Vai version of the DLR band was lightning in a bottle.

I like him in that format

I wonder who wrote the songs for it? Sheehan and Vai? I agree sometimes the guitar player plays best when being restrained by the song structure with defined solo and outro windows making them play concisely rather than just jamming slop.
