I never got into it. Roth was to vaudeville with his vocals and it was just to much of the band trying to be Van Halen

On the flipside alot of VH was Roth.

Noticed how they changed musically when when he left. I personally think that's a credit to Dave and the influence he brought to VH.

That's a rather illuminating viewpoint..........that DLR with VAI sounded more original Van Halenish than 5150 with Sammy. I may even go as far to say that the DLR albums have that signature groove and swing that 5150 and later VH albums lost.....Was that a DLR influence moreso than Ed????

Even with Ed's great playing the songs completed morphed with Sammy's pop influence and or the direction Ed wanted to go moving on from the Ed of old.

I wonder who wrote the songs for it? Sheehan and Vai? I agree sometimes the guitar player plays best when being restrained by the song structure with defined solo and outro windows making them play concisely rather than just jamming slop.

Ya Steve and Billy wrote the music . Shy Boy was all written by Billy except the intro . He played it in his first band Talas

Yep.

Eat Em was the basic VH formula in terms of songs and structure for an album.

It had straight ahead rockers, boogies, something kitchy, something summery sounding etc...

Honestly, that whole Eat Em era really was the last remnants of the whole classic Van Halen vibe and feel. And that tour is still top 5 of my all time favorite shows I've seen. It was unhinged and I'd seen VH the three previous tours. As I said a few weeks back, all I remember of the 5150 tour was Ed's funky pants and that little egyptian whatever walk they did. My least favorite VH tour. I saw them years later with Sammy several times and like those tours better.

Certainly it was the height of Dave's career even though 1984 was the height of Van Halen.

Not at all . I think Van Halen changed after him because Sammy can really sing other types of songs . Dave can not sing ballades or deep songs . Yes Dave influenced them in great rock in ways . But his voice held Ed back from writing deeper or more melodic songs . It’s just not Dave to like those things

Oh I don't disagree with that at all in fact Sammy allowed Ed to expand as a writer. Still they did change.

Again my point was Eat Em sounded like VH because that was Dave.

I believe he used Steve Steven's Marshall when his Carvins weren't cutting it. Pete Thorn did an "Amps in the Zone" ep about it a few years ago that's worth checking out.
