With the Vb-101, the sound was too fizzy for me.
I shape the sound with the palmer and then add cabsim plug

In fact, I have a really good sound with the palmer but it's better with a cabsim after it.

Ah, cool. I add a mic pre at the end. Really helps mellow out any fizz as well, and adds a little tube warmth. :)

A preamp after Palmer...looks cool :-)

I'm at a congress and can't watch the video ;-)

The Palmer 03/04 are going to give you more of head direct with a EVL 12l tone and a little less of a Celes V30 break up tone. Meaning you won't get the speaker breakup as much if that is part of your sound. So if you are recording or Playing live direct, you might want to add a speaker simulator like Torpedo or a software IR, GT Electronics Speaker Emulator, ADA(http://www.adaamps.com/Products/ada-GCS2/GCS2.htm) etc to help shape your speaker tone a little more.

I don't feel I need anything else with the Palmer and you might also.

This thread has made me rethink about the Palmer PDI03 and very intrigued by the PDI09 too.

When we recorded our first EP the studio had an 03 and I really liked the way it sounds on the record and sure loved the ease of cranking my Marshall 2210 at the time (as most ppl in the know abt the 2210 the master volume is almost useless, the taper works from 0 to about 1,2 and after that it's full blast :D ). Being the cheap ass I am I never got around to trying the 03 in a live setting but it seems like the perfect fit from what I read now.

Also the 09 seems very interesting, and it's cheap as well. How does the "attenuator" in it work, at all or just barely audibly?

The 09 is just a direct box and has no load in it. IIRC good if you are able to get the volume out of your amp on stage or recording and run a line to the board /FOH

Not an attenuator, more a loudness thing not to overload your mixer/preamp.
With the PDI09 you still need a load(box) or cab . . .

Btw: mixing the PGA04 with a real mic sounds very nice, because the PGA delivers the bottom end which a mic like the SM57 isn't able to record.

And as you can see in the vid: the PGA04 can sound as good as the 03, just with the ability to shape the sound a bit more.

I'd also like to add that I would always add some "ambience" reverb to these direct sound to get closer to a more natural result, but I'm sure real recording pros could add another trick or two . . .

Well that explains why I like it so much and get a pretty damn good match with the 09/03. ;)

For recording purposes my buddy uses a load box (Weber attenuator) for his guitar while I just use my cab that I put in another room with some blankets over. No problem really.

The 09, a much cheaper unit than the 03 has the same cab sim, and has essentially the same sound as the 03 minus the load.

That guy is hysterical. So quirky. Great gear demos too!

I've got the PDI-09 and it sounds awesome. So much easier to get a good tone out of an amp and DI than mucking with a modeler.

Wonder why the meters in the 04 demo didn't work?
My Mesa Mk III do not really light them up. Have to really crank the 20th xtc to get them lit. I also think you can open up the 04 and flip a switch to Chang there function.
