My only real point is that if a guy owns tons of gear and is not a good player, but is having fun participating in the conversation, who cares, it's his time and money. We can all make up our own minds on what gear we want and decide who's ears we trust...Steve

I think you just said it better than me and in way fewer words. I can't stand it when someone bad mouths good gear that a pro would play happily on, or when someone makes it out like they are the only ones who have figured out that some little builder has made the best product ever and that NOTHING else out there compares.

It then makes me crazy if you have already heard a clip from them or hear one later and it strikes you as the guy would be perfectly suited to be making that same racket on a Mexican Standard Strat and a Marshall combo.

You are right though, if someone is having fun and being cool about it, I don't care if they are a total beginner or hobbyist or whatever. And, I do have more tolerance for jerks if they are smoking players. Oftentimes, some of those guys are, and maybe that is what helped them to get so good on guitar, who knows? For the most part, most of the best players on this forum are pretty humble and down to earth and fun. If any of them came here anymore, I could tell you their names.

I don't think I will ever forget the thread that Billybogner (Kalewahaia or whatever) started on here about how great of a tone he was getting with a Boss DS-1 into a slightly clean Marshall and the thread immediately became about how that pedal sucked and how he should try this or that because it would sound better. And I'm thinking, Boss DS-1... the same pedal Gary Moore used with his Marshalls and vintage strats to create one of the best rock strat sounds ever in his "We Want Moore" phase? Boss DS-1, the same pedal Vai and Satriani run into the front of Bogner XTC100B's or whatever signature amp a well-known company has designed for them?

Boss DS-1, the same pedal Billybogner, definitely one of the most badass players to ever grace Rig Talk with his presence, is suggesting has really surprised him as to how cool of a tone he is getting with him. Yes, lets ignore him and be sure and listen to Metalmaster274362 even though we have never heard him play a single note and buy the $200 improved version of the DS-1 that some guy has developed in his mom's basement.

I see 2 types of guys here, guys like you and eye that can look past the b.s. and enjoy others fun and those that have their underwear wound so tight they can't enjoy anything. I started this thread because I seen 4-5 posts lately kinda sorta ripping on people with high end gear or too much gear and that attitude surprises me when the whole purpose of a forum like this is to enjoy gear. Hopefully those that are upset at what you and I own will find some other outlet and move on.

I'm with ya most of the way. What I'm saying is good player or bad, with good tone or bad, if the dude is telling Mark that he should dump the DS-1 because it sucks after Mark says he's digging it, he's an asshole. Please see my previous comment on assholes.

Many men on this forum and gear threads the last few days can use these....

There are so many aspects to the guitar hobby. Playing, tone seeking, collecting, building, recording, etc. If you are happy doing any part of it or parts of it, more power to you. Enjoy the chase no matter what you chase, it can be a lifetime of fun.

This should be every guitar forum's mantra! And it's seriously sig-worthy as well!

That guy you are talking about is humble and cool though. He never comes off like he is an authority. he always seemed to kind of float under the radar in threads with Ralle and Rockstah and after years, yeah, he nailed it. He was so obsessed with that particular tone I think he is a little more dialed in on playing how he does, but knowing how to achieve that particular tone.

Maybe what I should have said is that the guys I'm talking about think they know good tone because they hear a great player through a rig and look at what is in the rig and then buy it because they recognize "good tone". That player who inspired them to buy that rig could have inspired them to buy any of 20 different rigs that same day if that is what they had been playing instead.

The test becomes, if they know good tone, do you think they could take that guys same rig with everything on zero and dial in a killer tone by themselves with them playing through it. My guess is that 9 out of 10 times they couldn't. That one out of ten times is the guy you are talking about that you used to shoot down my argument completely.
