So, let's turn this into Rig-Talk thread

IF you could have only ONE rig.
what would it be, and would you make do with that or give up guitar playing? :)

I gave up playing a long time ago.

At this point though, my Deliverance 60 and Deliverance 4x12 is my main squeeze.

Ah liberals and redistribution of wealth. It WILL be the end of us.

And the guy above. You couldn't be more wrong. I am extremely fortunate and do not envy any man. We work very hard and have what we need. My family is healthy and that's all I need.

My main goal from here on out is to make sure my children have the same opportunities I've had.
Current cradle to grave policies are going to make it very difficult, but ill be damned if I give up.

I could go on and on but I hate typing on this silly phone!

What I wrote wasn't intended to be pro-socialism, although in retrospect, I can see how it could be perceived that way. I meant that those who are envious are a bunch of hypocrites because nothing would be any different.

Not you Zap. The post above yours.

Rant time:

Over the past few months there have been a number of posts kinda sorta insinuating that collecting gear is not cool. The posts usually ask why so much equipment is needed, can't you get by with one guitar and one amp type of questions. I realize that to the newbie the amount of gear required to put together a killer rig can be overwhelming but newbies usually aren't asking the questions. It seems to me some folks are very envious of those with more $$$ to spend on gear.

I enjoy everyone here sharing their "toys.," Some of the stuff we see here I'll never see or be able to purchase but it is real cool to be able to see pictures and clips of it.

If it bothers you that some people are more well off than you, get a grip.

end of today's rant :D :D

I understand both sides of the story , I use to buy and sell lots of gear in search of tone . Now I'm to poor t do so . I have sold almost all of it,and luckily I have kept what sounded best and IMHO my tone is really smoking . .So I guess I'm a little jealous of you guys with alot of really good amps . On the other hand even when I could afford it I never had more than 4 amps at once and never more than 5 guitars at once .
What I do find very amusing is Adults with tons of high end gear or even just a piece or 2 of high end gear that are really poor musicians .Classic example is someone on this forum (will remain nameless ) who is always buying and selling really expensive top end gear and I really respected his opinion . Then I heard him play and lost all respect for his musical opinions .
you say maybe he has a good ear and what does his playing have to do with that ? IMHO if he had a good ear he could hear that his playing sucked and wouldn't post clips

Splatter,

That adult may have played guitar somewhat as a kid and parked it when family/career time came along (I'll never understand that either but I know many folks do quit playing when they get married and start a family). 10-15 years later they have some $$$ and want to get back into playing. They research what amp is the ticket for their type of ideal tone and have the funds to buy it. Then they get excited as to how good it sounds and share the cool tones with us. Yeah, the dude will never give Steve Via any competition but he is happy. That is the joy of music. He probably hacks through the same 5-6 songs every night driving his wife nuts but he is enjoying playing guitar. I am very happy for folks like that. Enjoy music gear in any way you see fit, just don't hurt yourself or others.

I don't know why some people care so much about other's shit.

Personally, I generally only read threads that are about gear or musical styles I'm interested in. Someone could have $100g worth of gear but if there's nothing I'm interested in then it really doesn't matter to me.

Envy doesn't really factor in; why would I envy 100g worth of something I don't want? Just because someone has more than I do? Seems kind of petty...

I actually play all my guitars and amps and I love having many different things to choose from. It's that simple. Some of you are over thinking this just a bit.
This^^

Collecting and/or simply having a lot of gear is not an issue of practicality. We are talking about a hobby here for most. Are hobbies in general pratical? Just the act of playing guitar may be impractical for some. Besides, who defines what practical is. Is someone who now owns 50 guitars now considered practical because they used to own 100?

If I could afford it I would own more amps, as for what others have doesn't bother me at all

That pretty much describes my situation (except I don't post clips for a reason...).

Tone searching is fine if it's within one's means. For me music and gear is the most expensive of my several hobbies, but I won't go as far as emptying my bank account to fuel them. While it's none of my business how people spend their money or theirs of mine, I think some people may need to realize when they can't realistically sustain their gear or the wheeling and dealing of it. And I hope they're not stretching themselves to regularly buy expensive gear to impress a bunch of people on forums most of whom they'll never meet, or to get their post counts up. Yeah it's fine that those who can afford to buy high end gear comfortably are sharing their experiences with the rest of us, I also like reading and hearing about amps and guitars that I might never get to use in person, let alone own. I'm not talking about anyone in particular, but I'm sure there people who need to cut back for their own good.

I swear this feels like group therapy. Oh yeah, NAMM 2013's around the corner!

Oh great, now this is being warped into a political thing. :bleh:

Work hard play hard. I was raised to know if you wanted something you have to be willing to work for it. As long as other responsibilities do not fall behind then i see nothing wrong with it, and even if it did, it isn't any of my business anyway. Lolzgreg works 20x harder than i do to single-handedly build a recording studio. I remember talking on the phone with him a long time ago and was shocked at how hard he works. He also has a great ear for music and it shows. Nothing wrong with that.

I couldnt care less about what gear you own just as long as all of the bases of life are covered. That is the way that i see it.

I do hate others who flaunt gear to backup an opinion. The gear that you own says nothing about your ability anymore than standing in a garage makes you a car or owning a ferrari makes you a great driver. This is Rig-Talk but i see alot of the (I've owned it before, therefore my opinion invalidates yours) attitude. Owning it and having a musical ear are two different animals.

I quit the band I was in after recording an album and went to school 16 hours away for 8 years. Worked and studied my ass off, not buying ANYTHING besides the necessities. I've even been driving the same car since high school ('91 CRX) and still have it in my garage. I just bought my first new car 2 years ago. One of the many inspirations I had while studying late at night on a Friday or Saturday (while everyone was out gigging or partying) was I would buy what I wanted when I wanted after I graduated. I nailed one of the best jobs possible in my field recently with one of the leading hospitals in the world. All of my priorities are in a row (socially and financially), now I'm going to buy what I want, when I want it. I will post when I acquire a new piece of gear, as many of us do. This shouldn't be taken as me flaunting gear, but as me wanting to share my happiness/satisfaction/accomplishment with a group of peers that feel the same way I do about music gear.

That being said I just ordered a LPC yesterday .

Shut up and practice or play a gig !

Loves me some gear though, and I do get jealous over certain gear. At the end of the day I'd rather have fun playing music and owning one or two nice things than owning 40 amps and chasing my tail. Or maybe we're all chasing, some just slower than others?

when my gear dictates how good my guitar playing is or what i play, then i'll worry about what you have.

when i have to justify how great my tone is to cover up my shitty playing in the multitude of youtube videos that i'll never make, then i'll worry about it.

it's really easy to get carried away with what we "have" and what we "are" in other peoples eyes, on the internet.

until some dumb fucking storm comes along, wipes you out, and 2 days later, you're huddling with your wife and kids in some shitty hotel without cable and eating ramen noodles, trying to justify your guitar tone to your concierge.

i dont care what you own, or play. and i certainly dont care if you care or dont care what i care to play or own.

tone isn't the only thing that's subjective. EVERYTHING is subjective.

this thread really objectifies my gear though.........
