Searching for a 3d super high gain head

I wrote Ola Englund/fearedse with a very short description of wht I'm after and he says AxeFX

Can you run the AxeFX straight into the mixing board for live playing? Or do you need a power amp?

You can do everything with only the Axe FX. You plug direct to the line ins on a board, or interface, OR setup a poweramp/cabinet for a more traditional backline. I use mine directly plugged into some Yamaha HS80Ms for recording at home. It's an amazing product, IMO... it's not going to be the same as standing in front of a 4x12 and quad of tubes though. If you're mostly wanting to record, especially at low volumes, it's the best thing out there.

Like I mentioned above, I'm currently mostly concerned with live, but will eventually be recording. Found another thead here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=102272 that seems to really lean towards amp vs using the AxeFX.

Anyone in Chicago got an AxeFX I can try out? Trade ya a six pack of good beer :)

The most 3d sound I've heard is the older Bogner Ubershall's. Massive and 3d.

Without question sounds like exactly what you want. Have a REV Blue and it's a go to for "that" sound.

5150 won't have the ass but a great amp

MAKO MAK4 with a good tube power amp.

Splawn Nitro !!!!

Yea, dude, this is Chicago, booze alone wont cut it!

Uberschall Twin Jet is devastating.

Herbert sounds good, but doesn't cut as well (no flame wars please, just IMHO)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the VH4 and the Hagen - their Channel 3s are outstanding for hi-gain brutality. And BOTH are the epitome of 3-DIMENSIONAL sonic bliss. And both offer more THUMP on tap that anyone could ever need.

i hear mostly votes for the earlier uberschalls. i've read up on some of the tech differences, but haven't gotten a grasp on the differences in sound, why do you say twin jet rather than the older ones?

my experience of Chicago so far (only a year, mind you) is that a six of Old Style is good for plenty of good times

Hey all. New here. Looking for suggestions. I have a new solo project, super pummeling, eviscerating metal. Kind of a "brutal death metal" sound, but a little more out there. Trying to avoid the djent sound, after something more dimensional and resonant. Anyway, I'm deep in the amp search. I first got a tiny terror hoping I could save some money and just boost it into the territory I need, but that thing sounds terrible with pedals, and doesn't have enough gain on its own, and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. After all the Mesa recto suggestions, I tried that ad nauseum, but I just don't like them. Finally the local boutique amp dealer got a diezel Herbert, and its pretty dead on the sound I'm after. Problem is, I simply cant drop the g's for it. So today I played a Rivera knucklehead tre, and I actually liked it quite a bit. Also played a thunderverb, and it was getting close, but I don't love the shape control. Finally, I played the thunderverb with a Rivera metal shaman, and it was pretty damn amazing. Feels weird to put a pedal in front of a $2300 head, tho. Maybe a jcm800 with the Rivera pedal? Any suggestions? Could really use the help, have reached the point of being crazy confused. Thanks in advance, and please don't flame the new guy. Cheers.

After 3 pages, 115 posts, some good recommendations(some of which have been repeated many times).... are you any less confused???

I know I told you the Uberschall, but I'd also like to 2nd the Nitro and add the Peters Chimera. All 3 amps can be had for under 2K.

IMO you're going to want an amp that gets your ideal tone without a boost or od pedal. Adding an od before an amp gives it that tight responsive sound and feel, but flattens out the sound a little bit. When I think 3D, I think of amps like the old XTC white chassis I briefly had and my Friedman modded Recto, where I could chunk away on a palm-muted power chord and each note came through with an elastic sort of "chew" around the notes, giving them depth and bloom. The sound had a sculpted chunky sound and feel, as though you could feel the "roundness" and depth of the sound in the room. Best I can describe it.

The Diezel VH4 I played and my Mark IV are less 3D and more "flat", but still have a bit of bloom and fill the room. Just a bit less juicy and more immediate. Amps like the Ubers, good rectos, Bogner 101B are very juicy and while the VH4, Mark series, VHT/Fryette are flatter and have a very structured gain. Oh, and the EVH 5150 III is very cool. It sort of falls in the middle of all these amps, at least to my ears. Not the juiciest tone, but really killer lead channel for aggressive metal styles and rivals Bogner, Soldano, etc.

BTW, Have you checked this out yet?

I am actually less confused, so thanks to all. I still have a bit of thinking and research to do on my own, but there is a lot of good info here, and I def have a better idea of my options than before. Checking out a nitro and Framus (same owner) tonight, so wish me luck.

Hey, just a quick blast from the past - as in a few posts up... Someone mentioned the Mako Mak4, and this - THIS - is an option you gotta check out for sure. I can't believe I gapped out and completely neglected to mention this one as well, so mega props to 'ibenhad' for bringing this one to the surface. The Dorado channel is probably one of the meanest, nastiest, most cutting hi-gain tones I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. It's searing hot man, cuts like a knife, and these preamps are going for less than a kilobuck!!! MONEY WELL SPENT.

Peace,
Mojo
