Splawn Quickrod vs EVH 5150iii 50 watt

Lots of QR love here. I loved mine for a while but the mids just wore me down. It might have been my switch from 34's to 6550's that influenced me at the time. I just remember the amp basically being so mid heavy that my detuned 6's sounded meh as far as note separation. The 5150 III 50 I have is cool and chewy and the mids don't bite your ears off. Not to say I wouldn't mind to try a Nitro sometime. Because oddly enough I play and prefer my Randall Thrasher alot more than the 5153 these days :)

But to be fair, the qr and evh are totally different amps. Apples and oranges

Since you have both of them, what would you say are the big differences?

The evh is more modern and compressed, and in keeping with that the tone is primarily coming from the pre amp . The quick rod is a modded marshal that relies more on the power amp.

They're both great. They're just different. The problem with a lot of the replies here is that I see people ignoring that these are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AMPS and going right into "this is better" mode.

I have tons of qr vids on my YouTube page -- shreder75 . Check them out and see if you dig the vibe. You'll like it or you won't. But like I said, I do have a QR up for sale.

Now that sounds more like what I'm looking for. It breathes! And I like how the mid gain Hendrix and VH stuff sounds. How loud was that in the room and what did you have the volume set at?

5153: Metalz

Splawn: Rawk

Both are great at what they do best.

It wasn't that loud. But it wasn't mouse fart either ;) probably 8:00 on the volume

I see the comment 5153 = metal and Splawn = rock.

The blue channel on the 5153 with the gain at about 11 o clock is a killer hard rock to classic metal sound. It has great articulation but also has enough of that lively, liquidy feeling when you solo. If you have the gain up too high on the 5153 it goes into full metal mode.

If we could get Eddie to play the 50w on the blue channel with all the EQ knobs around noon and the gain around 10-11 o'clock people would be losing their mind over his live tone. Instead he is a gain fiend.

I agree! My problem is that is the only real setting that I'm somewhat happy with on my 5153. I don't play a lot of super modern high gain stuff. I'm much more old school with my style. About the heaviest I'll get is 90's AIC/Tool, etc.

You need my quick rod, obviously ;)

I do own a Nitro, the EVH 50 watt and the EVH Stealth. I have owned the regular 100 watt 5153 and I have owned two QuickRods. Im a huge Splawn fan and luckily I have the 5153 and the Nitro. These are very different amps. I prefer the Splawn in a band mix but the 5153is way more forgiving.

Solution: buy Splawn and keep your 5153. Worked great for me.

I agree with this. If I had to have one, I'd keep the Splawn. ...Other poster is right about Blue channel doing hard rock really well, but to me the Splawn has a bigger sound to it. Almost too much!

Mine owns...i have a 2005 3 pre with the Kruse Variac Powerscaling...even at 5 watts, it will shake your nuts...

The splawn clips here are mine: http://www.krusekontrol.com/kruse_variac

That sounds fantastic!

I was actually on the Kruse Kontrol site last night since a buddy is getting the Shogun mod done to his H&K, and stumbled across your sound clips

I'm really struggling with getting the tone I want out of this 5150iii head. I've tried several different type of tubes. I'm really thinking it's the voicing that I'm not liking. Really considering selling it.

I'm going to see if Guitar Center will let me return the 5153 today. I just bought it on August 31st and it's only left my house once. Plus, I also purchased the 2 year service plan on it. I've been talking with Scott Splawn, and he was telling me that the older Quickrods aren't good at lower volumes and have a pretty bad clean channel. He has a few amps I'm definitely interested in. If Guitar Center won't let me return it, I'll probably put it up for sale here.

Dig that look
Thanks....I just got it...It is the first one in circulation with the new options....There is a mid cut switch which is very cool...It kinda changes the mids more towards a Marshall...And there is a old/new switch which changes the vibe to the older 2006 Quick Rods....Another very cool option....And i got the b+ switch to switch back and forth to the high voltage and B+....Anp has some changes under the hood also....Some added gain and all....I have owned a few QR's and this one is the best i heard

It sounds great....It has the loop volume.....You can go from a mouse fart volume on up.....Best master on amps right here

I have both and love both. I tend to use the evh50w far more because it's half the weight and almost half the size.. easier to take to gigs and band practices.

I modded my evh50w to make the channels more even
