You will find the HET's to be a little bit tighter than the 81/60 set and more pronounced mids, less sizzle in the highs. They pair well with Explorer type guitars (and they should).

I'm losing it. More people are saying the Hets are tighter
Maybe my memory is shot! Ill be doing that shootout next week so ill really dive in deep. The EMTY got here today.
I really like the Het Set.
I've got a couple of guitars with low and high gain passive pickups, plus one with a 81/85 set and one with the Het.
It's a very different active pickup. It almost feels like an in between an active and a passive set.
I've found them also very responsive e with a very cool brightness that it's hard to explain. Almost like an 81/85 with more air and clarity, or a tighter high output passive pickup.
It's an already classic for me.

I find that the Hets have more low end than the 81 and are also less compressed. They can sound pretty much as tight as an 81, but you have to dial back the bass on the amp a bit. In general, I prefer passives, but I like the Hets pretty well too. Not really a fan of the 81, mostly due to the compression. Here's a good comparison vid:
It is much easier in my opinion, to deal with a few dozen RT regulars than to take a chance with some random pole smoker on eBay. Most all of the used gear I have is RT bought.
Soon I will just get a multi guitar stand for Steve's hand me downs.

Cool vid. I like the Hets a bit more. And as others have posted, seems like small EQ difference and how you use a compressor would make the cover those other bases. I like the lower compression option, can't undo it very well but it can be added by pedal.
The neck pup with the volume rolled back on the Het vids sold me. Seems like a truly versatile Active.
