Aenima was recorded with Rectifier and Marshall. VH4 came into play during the Aenima live tour somewhere. He started the tour with the Mesa, but brought in the VH4. At one point he was using all three on stage, but phased out the Mesa.

I wonder if the older Rec's sounded better than the terrible modern versions lol

I believe this is the truth ..... I do not hear a VH4 on Aenima at all. I saw them the very first time they played any of the material from Aenima for anyone & there was only the Rectifier & Marshall on stage.

They sound different amp to amp individually like the Marshall's - I have played on dozens of them & they all sounded different.

From what I've read (no experience, myself), the original two-channel Rectifiers sound better than the latter three-channel versions.

The older Dual rectifiers had different transformers, the same ones as the Mark III, I believe. The older ones do sound better to me than the newer ones, but I haven't played the multi-watt ones yet.

They do. I tried newer ones and didn't like them, heard many awful recordings of them and used to slag them like mad.
Then I tried a Rev F. Recto next to my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV and it was great on the Orange mode! The MarkIV still sounded a lot more focused in comparison.

I heard demo recordings of the the Mini Recto which sounded brilliant, however I heard one onstage at a small gig and it still had a bit of that Recto mud to it with the hollowness. If I come across one I'll try it out.

The thing to remember though with AEnema, is that A LOT of the distorted sound you hear in the mix is actually the bass guitar.

I was thinking of this thread earlier today while listening to Stinkfist, and there's a bit where it sounds like just one guitar sound, but then as the chorus comes in the guitar becomes "stereo" as it sounds wider, which I guess was the Marshall through one channel and the Recto through the other channel. I wonder if that was just due to mixing, or did Adam A/B between the amps for different parts of the songs?
All I know is that his sound is the chemistry of using two amplifiers.


And going back to the opening post of this thread- it's interesting to hear on its own how much that Marshall Super Bass contributes to the actual high gain distorted guitar sound, the crunch and bottom end.

^^^ Yup, Super Lead/Bass can get a good amount of gain if you crank them up and bridge the channels. Opiate and Undertow albums were 100% Super Lead.

Most Rectifiers do not sound all that great to me .... often muddy or harsh. If you find a good one they are huge & aggressive. Turning up the power amp to band volumes or louder makes a huge difference with this amp. None of them sound good to me at lower volumes. I also much prefer the older 2 channel version..

No idea what they did recording - but live it was always both amps on & no channel switching. Orange on the Rectifiers or 3 on Diezel - mixed with the Marshall. He uses the volume on the guitar a lot.

The reason many people do not change channels when using more than one amp is the phase changes every time you add a gain stage.

The Mark III transformers was only on the very early ones. Not sure when but they had their own transformer before long.
