Thats that Grooveking guy from Hawaii's setup right?

Back in the day, ADA. I used MP-1 and MP-2 eventually my main pre was the MP-2. At one time, I think I had 3-4 MP-1's, 3 MP-2's, an MQ-1....now I'm down to my last, former main, MP-2 which is for sale.

The only two preamps I have, and use somewhat regularly are my Marshall JMP-1 (with JFX-1) and my Tech 21 PSA 1.1. I'm not a big rack user anymore, these days I prefer my tube amps (combos) or modelers (amp or on the floor).

AFAIK, not that I have looked, there are only a few preamps out there. The Engl MIDI Tube Preamp E 580 looks interesting, but it is more than I need or want to pay for a preamp. Anyone have one of these, or the "new" Rocktron preamps (not the Prophesy II)? Voodoo Labs was supposed to add MIDI to their preamp, but I never saw a new updated version, anyone have one of these?

I can't put my finger on it exactly,I like the way it sounds,I didn't say it sounded bad. But I think it needs a little more beef to it. What ever pros your talking about could have been playing brighter amps, like Marshalls etc. Or it could be my power amp,"Mesa 295" I wouldn't call that a made for metal power amp but it works fine, and I don't like boosting or putting an EQ in front or back of it,I like straight signal,no FX no nothing.
I will say however it's tight, punchy, great rock tone.
For the money the mako is well worth it and then some.

Hey Locoed,

Feel free to send it in for a bass boost mod if you don't think it is enough.
On my dime....no charge.

Andrew

I would like to say Larry Jon Schaffer sig. preamp, but I can't yet.
really? I thought it was promised for June!? :scared:

Pushed back due to personal reasons, which I am respectful of. I will wait & am confident it'll be worth it.

The 295 is more metal than most guys that own them, it is NOT the power amps issue................

How much bass do you guys need in a guitar tone anyways?

Andrew, just another reason why you need to release that 4-space monster stereo poweramp to match the Mak4!!

Andrew is the shit...period.

I'm running my Mak4 through a VHT 2150 and I'm getting plenty of lowend. In the same rack I'm running a Fish with a Mesa 2:90, deep engaged and I'm getting just as much lowend thump from the Mak4/2150. Maybe try a different poweramp or speakers?

GP3
I've owned just about every preamp made except for the Mako, and the GP3 kills all of them for me.
Agreed, great preamp although I've not tried many others.

I have speakers covered,green backs,V 30s,300 watt EV.waiting for scumbacks.
How much low end do I need? Whatever it takes to make me happy.

And yes,Andrew is a good man,my next amp is coming from him.
Then Dave Friedman.

new member. I'm a HCAF refugee and have been on TGP since HCAF went to pieces but I think I fit in better here from what I've read lurking.

I'm running a mp-1(stock) and a triaxis with an a/b/y switch. Awesome rig, happiest I've been with my sound in years. I'm not a metal player. Hair metal yes. My triaxis is noisy with high gain settings. I assumed this is normal but has anyone else experienced this? It is much noisier than similiar gain settings on the mp-1 even though the mp-1 is at least 20 years old. Also, if anyone is familiar with the triaxis and has any settings for getting as fendery cleans as possible out of it I would appreciate it. I've had no trouble dialing in good crunch and high gain but my cleans are so-so I would say. Thanks in advance.

I've owned just about every preamp ever, and I never connected with the GP-3. It wasn't "Too stiff", I just didn't think it sounded very warm or vocal to me.

I'd say Soldano X99 and Mesa Triaxis. Those are the two I kept after all these years. I've tried a lot. Special mention for Steavens Radioactivator, very very nice. I'd really like to try a Climax S3, though. Very rare, never seen one with my own eyes. I like he look of the thing and it is said to be awesome...

Another Vote for the Langner !

It has the most usable gain of any pre I have tried and I have owned a shit load.
