Which of these 2 amps would you choose?

They're different enough that it comes down to personal taste in what flavor you prefer. I know both builders, and both are equally top notch.

The last time I played a 101B was back in '98 so my recollection of how it sounded is blurry at best.

That thread with the Reinhold and Lukather video ignited deep seeded gas for a 101B.

FWIW, I don't find his tone in that video dark at all. Most guys, however, do.

I didn't watch that whole video, but the beginning tones were amazing.

Ok. Gonna throw in a new player.

CAA PT-100
Contender.

Ask Rick (Inca Roads)

I've heard some nice Marshall-flavoured tones out of that amp. I guess the question is what style of music is the amp going to be used for. Based on clips the EH3 reminds me more of the '70s, the PT-100 of the '80s and the Ecstasy of '90s tone – granted I'm sure you can get a lot of different sounds out of any of these amps.

Wasn't Suhr working on a new version of the PT-100? I'd love to get something like a PT-100 that can go from Fender cleans to really heavy Marshall-flavoured tones – if not prohibitively expensive.

Definitely worth looking into.

I'm looking for heavy rock tones ala Doug Aldrich and John Sykes. That would be the primary goal of the amp. I also need really clean cleans with nary a hint of breakup.

I was kinda wondering about the god-knows-when it's gonna be released, new Suhr PT-100.

Right now, my Rocket Fuel boosting OD2 on my DSL100 gets me all the Aldrich I need, but I would like to find an amp that can give me those tones without the need for a boost pedal.

If I'm overlooking any other amp out there that can give me what I'm looking for, please feel free to enlighten me

Every experience I've had with PWE has been less than positive.

Please expand.

First, the one at Lugo's amp shootout grenaded the power tubes, and I've had two other friends that had them and had one reliability issue or another that prevented the amp from living up to potential.

Then again, Mightywarlock's Mark V went BOOM at Lugo's shootout as well...

I shall retire to contemplate...

Yeah, great info, thanks. A guy can really make use of your useful info.

I'd go PWE
Bogner- owned 3, sold 3
PT-100- also owned and didn't like.

What about the PT-100 did you not like?

If you like your DSL just keep it for your Aldrich fix and get a Mesa Mark III for your Sykes fix. For the Whitesnake 1987 and Blue Murder albums Sykes used Mark series Boogies. Just get an amp switcher and go between the amps, and save yourself a ton of cash while you're at it.

It was way too bassy. The character of the distortion didn't sound good (to me)

Knowing what everyone knows about new production tubes you choose to come to the conclusion that the amp grenaded the tubes and not the other way around. Then, you throw out some "info" about two friends who had PWE amps with reliability issues without being specific. Were these issues tube related? Were the amps purchased second hand and shipped across the country with one layer of bubble wrap around the amp as I have seen many times? Would you come to the same conclusion if a set of tubes burned up in one of your preferred amps? The amp in Lugo's video was retubed re-biased and has been working fine ever since.

Not trying to bust your balls but if you're going to deem these amps unreliable, at least be specific. Don't you think that with all the threads on various forums about PWE we would have heard about these reliability issues? I certainly would have, at least from people who purchased them new and so would my dealers. I've repaired many amps including the brands mentioned in this thread and would never come to the conclusion you did, you know, tubes being what they are and all. I had one guy swearing up and down that his amp (a very well regarded brand) was a POS and unreliable and he finally admitted that he was using a guitar cable for the speaker output but didn't believe it would be a problem.

You hear stories about amps having problems all the time, for most brands, Sometimes it's the user's fault, sometimes the tubes, sometimes the actual components. When you hear the same story about the same amp over and over, then you might consider it has reliability issues, but I don't think that's the case with PWE stuff. Since racerevlon has had personnal bad experiences with the small sample size of PWE amps he's been around, well 1 + 1 = 2 in his mind, can't blame him for that.

Any 101B owners have any issues using pedals in the fx loop?

IIRC, the XTC loop is made for +4 or rack unit levels.

I have had an Ecstasy for about a year and a half. So far I've been fairly happy with it. Occasionally I'll get the urge to sell it, but that's often wanting to see if the grass is greener on the other side. I'd wanted a Bogner amp for a long time and I'm really happy I took the plunge and bought one. I have no experience with the PWE unfortunately.

'Supp, Will :)

Does your XTC fx loop take pedals well?

They are two amazing sounding amps!

Very tough choice! I'd love to own either of them!
