You Guys Hear This Cover Yet?

Halford brings it, of course and it's certainly better than most things I hear today in pop culture. Cool to see an appetite for it today, that's for sure. Anyone who knows this song owes it to themselves to deep-dive into Accept - their Marshall tones are it. I've always chalked it up to great production and masterful guitar work and recently asked the robot what amp they used for various songs back then, the bot initially said a '68 plexi small box...and "other" various marshall amps w/EMG's. But then the bot started giving more cryptic answers, so I don't know. The sag and sweet brightness in their early tone is it to my ears.

I would guess the original was recorded to tape, which sounds a helluva lot better to my ears than digital....

Are you certain about those EMGs? I love EMGs...But I'm surprised, that Accept "ball to the wall" era tone seems more like a hot PAF sound to my ears.

Not certain at all. I agree it sounds hot paf and was surprised when that's what the bot said. Just before posting this I asked it what amp/pickups were used for Princess of the Dawn - bot said 100W plexi and fishman pickups, so who knows??

I did a little research..and it looks like you may have been right. Wolf's rhythm track was actually a strat style guitar with an EMG in the bridge.

The original throbs and pulses with that delicious grind on top. This one pokes and sizzles. Can’t say I like it but the original is peak, quality 80’s metal production. I’ve always felt Udo is one of the best metal singers alive and this certainly shows it. Accept have not been the same without him.

The newer version tone is definitely tighter and brighter and lacks some if that vintage organic warmth of the original...that said, I really dig it.

RIght on, thanks for following up. I was actually a little disappointed to learn EMG's b/c I'd tried them once before (long time ago) & liked them, but they sounded synthetic or somehow too 'perfect'. No clue what amp I had or what guitar it was in so don't take that as a knock on EMG's, at all. 101b blue channel is the goods for Accept and I've been after that high end for a long time - my presence is dimed on the red channel. Coincidentally I've had this very discussion w/my little bro (fellow metalhead & in a band) - he immediately said MXR just as BB shared. Thank you, BeyondBlack, this is helpful to me. I've been 'embracing' the brightness of a strat rather than fight it

edited to add: Halford is the obvious choice for this, but I think what we have here, with Udo, is a bonafide instance when the student becomes the master - his voice is perfection for Accept. I think it's Halford paying homage here. That's awesome, but at a show this is the song that comes on and I check out for whiz and a beer. I like the nuggets found only from a deep dive into a band. That was a thing back in the old days..lol

EMG's are AMAZING...with the right amp and for a certain tone. It's very hard to break someone into EMGs that has been playing moderate output PAF style passives their entire guitar life...And it just as hard to break somebody of the EMG habit and move to trying passives, as they make playing easier and make many players sound better. Just my thoughts.
