Another dilemma by Mike - The end (for now)

Brad,

I thought about this some. I tend to set every amp I own to sound the same way. Of course the amps characteristics shine through but you could hear me play both amps and if you were honest you may not be able to tell them apart. I'll try to do just that this weekend, I'll record both set up how I like it and I'll post the clips.

The most mystifying part of this thread to me, is that anyone can't get the tell the differences between the CCV and Friedman; totally and completely different feel, sound, and response.

Simple, most players have a tone in their head they try to recreate with whatever amp they play. Two modified marshall's are going to sound much alike when dialed into personal taste. Despite both heads come out of the same shop, they both are built very different.

I get that....

Have you played both?

nope just the Brown eye 100.

I had severe GAS for a BE100. Owning a CCV and reading this thread may have cured the GAS. Thanks, Mike. First time this forum has cured, rather than created, my GAS.

The CCV is truly an awesome amp.
I went the opposite way. :dunno:

I did too.
I owned a New CCV and like Brett
I just couldn't get along with it! I
couldn't stand the Diode clipping, it
seemed the only way to get a decent
High Gain Grind, there was just something
processed about the tone with the switch on.

I have found my 2 Favorite High Gain amps also,
I don't think they're going anywhere, anytime soon!!

The CCV is darker and a little more articulate, the BE while the bottom end is tight has more of a Marshall looseness.
Darker AND more articulate? Not sure I understand

My issue though is the second part of your sentence...it's simply incorrect. The real "win" with the BE for me is that it retains the Marshall voicing while exhibiting NONE of the typical looseness. How high are you running the bass control?

You are correct, I did not describe the way the BE sounds. It sounds like a Marshall without the flub. The CCV when I was A/B'ing them sounded darker when hitting chords, I don't know how else to describe it. The notes of the chord were more articulate than the BE too. Again, these are not big differences, but they are what I heard. This weekend I am going to record the same song with both amps so you can hear what I mean.

Mike- if they sound and feel similar to you, sell the one you can get more money out of, and keep the other...at the end of the day, they're just amps...use whatever satisfies you...

FWIW, I definitely wasn't trying to criticize you with my posts...I personally think they're very different, but everyone feels and hears things differently...apologies if it came off as a shitty response....not my intent.

No problem, no offense taken. I don't want amps that sound dramatically different. I have "my" sound good or bad and that is it. I am very happy as both amps easily meet my needs. I feel very blessed to be able to own a CCV and a BE, I really plan on keeping them for life. Of course both are different animals but the difference is not like Fender vs Marshall. That is what I meant and I am quite sure I did not describe it well either :)

Due to my back ( 5 surgeries) I have one amp upstairs and one in the practice room in the basement, we practice every week and I would not want to bounce my amp up and down the steps all the time. I also like having a 2nd amp in case the first one dies. This happened to me last summer, the Cameron blew out the 2nd channel. I gigged for a couple of months with the old Marshall while Dave Friedman fixed the Cameron.

I will post the clips this weekend and I think you will see what I mean.
