Bands that play in Drop A#?

I believe "Drop" tunings most commonly refer to lowering the bottom string by a tone, & leaving the rest of the intervals intact. Drop tuning can "start" at any key, as long as the 6th string is down a tone from the 5th. E.g. Unchained, Them Bones, etc. Hence the name "DropD", though those two examples are DropC# actually.

Most of the bands mentioned here use various lowered tunings, in standard intervals, just lowered in pitch.

A#/Bb,

A few that come to mind are Nevermore, Cannibal Corpse, Bury Your Dead, Slipknot on Iowa, Orgy, etc...

Korn are in A. So is Dino in Fear Factory/Divine Heresy, etc...

Those bands, especially Nevermore, use 7 string guitars. I think the person is asking about 6 string guitars.
He didnt specify. The point was that all those bands tune to Bb. Although, i think only BYD and Slipknow on Iowa are DROP Bb.

You can't do drop A# tuning on a 7 string though.

Why not? Tune the whole thing up half a step, then drop the top string a step...

Expanded range.

Slipknot recorded everything on Iowa in Drop A#. This is where I cut my teeth on serious drop tunings. Most guitars won't hang this low.

Maybe some "metalcore" bands but I don't know any death metal bands in drop A# (unless we,re talkin bout straight A#)

not unless you get into a longer scale neck, 26.5"+

I have two of the Jim Root Tele's. They are both short neck and hold the tunings pretty well. I found that guitars with fixed combination bridge/tailpiece do OK. Through body strung guitars with a flat mounted bridge do OK. Guitars with a post mounted bridge, like Les Pauls, forget it. Some locked tremelo guitars do OK and some not. I was using Everly string packs too for drop tunings. They got one pack with a 65 E string. But, I found you didn't have to go that severe. I settled in with 11-15-18-28-38-56 Ernie Ball's.

Bury Your Dead is in A on 6-string guitars. Slipknot is in B and A# on 6-strings.

You actually do not get that much more range with the top string. Just a couple extra notes at the very top.

Not a requirement. My PRS at 25.5 holds B and A# just fine. Intonations is spot-on.

11-60, but I like super heavy strings. I use 12-62 on a baritone in A#.

For comparison, our other guitarist runs 10-56 on a Les Paul in B, and 11-58/60 on a PRS in A#.

"Better" is subjective. A baritone will generally have a rounder tone. If you're cool with that, awesome. It works for me on some songs, but not on others. Live, of course, it's a bit different. I use the baritone live because our heavier songs are in A# and I have a tendency to beat the shit out of it.

That was AWESOME  Reminds me of Lifesblood EP/Remission -era Mastodon, who are one of my favorite bands.

And I wish I could grow a beard like that

I believe also the Clint Lowrey from Sevendust and some of the Dark New Day stuff was in Drop A#. His PRS guitars hold it well too. As does Pete's PRS Custom 24's from Chevelle. The trem has to be locked though.

Meaning I dont want to beat the shit out of my Custom 22 as much, not that it would hold tuning any better or worse.

I think Mastodon played in Dropped B on some songs on The Hunter.
