I love Gary, music isn't a competition, but for that style there was no one more fierce than SRV.

We could all lay a half dozen SRV solo's up here that absolutely exhaust you as a listener. In a good way.

I was lucky enough to see the SRV/Jeff Beck tour and I still remember how incredible his playing was. One of the best shows I ever saw! Terry Bozzio was playing drums for Beck and he was also amazing.

I have been a blues player and listener for a very long time.

Such a wide open question.

For me I like to integrate the things I have learned from Mark Knopfler and Gilmour into what I play. That is what just resonates with me.

I have to say also that Stevie Ray Vaughn was a consummate blues man. It is hard to listen to his version of Little Wing and not find tons of impressive bits to learn and apply. Texas Flood is another lead of his that just smokes....

But you know, Jimmy Page did some great work as well. I like so many of his vibe songs. Tea For One. Bloody classic...

What makes a particular lead great in a blues song is the fit and feel for me.

Moore and Frank Marino were two of my fav hotter lead blues players.

And our boy EVH did some swanky blues on Fair Warning CD.

I feel fortunate to have seen SRV in '89 at Riverfest in St Paul. I went to go see Jake in Badlands at a side stage to the main stage. Great show, felt bad for them as there were like 50 people there. Later went to see SRV on the main stage. Wasn't really a fan before seeing him, I was just into shred stuff more. But I left blown away. He played for 2 hrs straight and had a headphone mic, shuffled his side to side shuffle for 2 hrs, no break that I can recall. And, I heard on the radio later that after the show he went downtown to a club in MPLS and jammed with a local blues band. I was a fan for sure after that show. Awesome.

I've been watching way too much SRV lately. I need to stop, otherwise I'll find myself buying a strat in my sleep. The wife won't be happy with me, at all, haha.

I've been on a big SRV and Eric Johnson kick lately. I just bought an old Tube Driver, and got my Ibanez RG770DX back after 3 years, so now I'm spending my playing time with that guitar, the Tube Driver, an old fuzz and Fender amp models, going for those sounds. I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting, but I want a real strat now!

Neal Schon is a tremendous player, incredible vibrato. On some of those early Santana albums and early Journey albums are some of his best work, imo. I think he is underrated, because of Journey being considered a pop band.

Gary was one of the greats! There are many great blues players going way back. Albert King, Buddy Guy and many more. Stevie is awesome too!. I remember reading a story from a fan who played guitar himself.
He was at a show where Stevie lost his voice not long after the set began. Rather than blow off the show, he asked his audience if they would mind if the band just played without him singing. The fan reported that what ensued was the most intense onslaught of blues guitar virtuoso he has ever witnessed. Stating the entire audience was mesmerized. Wish I could find where I read this. You could tell through his words how incredible it must have been to be there.
