Yes, exactly. Fender engineering used 4 20w parts and fender marketing decided that was 100w because they had a 100w amp and they didn't want to deal with it. You'd need a doctor with a flashlight to find where the other 20w came from.

Fair enough. I have never blown a speaker doing it, and am not concerned about doing so in the future.

100% this. Regardless if it's 20 watts or 25 watts, the fact is there are no widespread reports of people melting the speakers in the EVH 412 cab using a 100 watt head.

Sure If you're pushing a Marshall Super Lead into power amp distortion there's a good chance you'll melt the voice coil since you're probably putting out 200 watts or more. If you're running a high gain amp like the EVH Stealth or similar you're getting all you saturation from the preamp and are not approaching the max power handling of the speakers. Any experienced high gain player know power amp distortion = diarrhea farts. So you're not going to approach max clean power to be loud enough where it would destroy the speaker.

Yes but technically one can develop issues regarding power handling and it's important to be aware of the risk. Nothing more or less than that......


Be aware of the risk and if your comfortable with it enjoy, if not check out other options...... No harm, no foul

That's an amusing line of bullshit. Celestion states the spec clearly. It's 20w. That's what's printed on the speaker. That's what's on their website. That's what resellers quote.

It would be to Celestion's advantage to sell the speaker as a 25w unit. They don't because they can't because it's not

All I do is match ohms . I have no idea what the fuck you guys are talking about. But ask Omni about my tones in person . They are great . So why even think about this stuff
My 98 5150II has never even blown a tube . Still sounds great . I’ve just used with 1x 12 to a full stack . I just match ohms
I’m blown away by this thread . So have any you fucked your amps up this way as debated ? Like what’s the odds . Who’s had it happen ?

I play mostly high gain so no, I've never blown a speaker and I regular play loud; like 105 dB is my baseline. My saturation comes mainly from the preamp, not power amp. From your clips I suspect the same of your playing. So I'm not pushing past the listed rating of my amp. For the longest time I gigged my Crate BV300 with a a cab that only handled 240 watts (4 V30's). The BV300 sports a SVT power section; and we all know how loud that can get. There was many a time I'd sneak the volume up during practice to drown out the entire band where you could barely hear the ting of the cymbals being smashed. Never blew a speaker. Then I was never really pushing my amp into power tube saturation and not approaching max clean power.

Even if you did blow a speaker I'd think you'd hear it pretty easily. And if you did you'd still have a load on you amp. So as long as you shut it off things would be fine; even a blown speaker has a load.
