I won't be downloading it, because it doesn't sit right with me. Don't care what others do (not my place to judge anyone else), but it feels like stealing to me,so I don't do it.

I'll probably download it and see if it's worth buying. I'm one of those "try before you buy" people, esp. after being burned by the latest 2 NIN albums and Weezer albums. There are a few bands that I'll buy the CD without pre-screening (Opeth, Fugazi, Neurosis, Rush, etc), but for the most part... Yeah, if I listen to it more than a few times, then I pick up the CD (usually at a show to help support the band as much as possible).

Jason,
Smoke a fatty and listen to "All Nightmare Long". I did this last night and listened to it 4 times. It kicks ass
Sincerly,
Mike
i tried dude. i just don't dig it. ya knowm i was talking to a friend the other day and he asked a question..."if master of puppets was released today, and you'd never heard metallica before...would you like it?"
now, master of puppets is 2nd on my "greatest albums ever" list...right behind reign in blood, so this album is a big deal to me. to be honest tho, i don't think i would. my tastes have changed sooooo much over the years that i just don't think i would love it like i do. just hetfield's vox alone wouldn't do it for me. i mean, alot of my friend's bitch about load and reload"s vox but i really don't think he's changed THAT MUCH vocally. another thing, is hammett...i never really liked him a whole lot but now i absolutely haaaate his solos. like i said dude, things change.
the whole letter thing was just for fun. i don't want them or expect them to quit at all. i was just expressing my disdain for their newer material. and who knows, maybe it's just me.

Jugg, you can stop hanging off Gary Holt's nutsack already. :D I like Exodus as much as the next guy, but this music was never meant to sound like Exodus. I like this and I like Exodus too...because they're different. So sue me. :) For that matter, the Police's "Synchronicity" is still one of my all-time favorite albums. I bet that blows everyone's mind... ;)

Love you James, But I'm not asking Metallica to SOUND like Exodus, what I AM wanting of them is the aggression and attitude they use to have and they simply DO NOT HAVE IT.... Listen to Fabulous Disaster or Bonded By Blood, then throw in Tempo Of The Damned or Atrocity Exhibition and the Aggression and Attitude are still very much there, hell even Slayer still have it, and several other bands, Exodus is just my go to example because they kick so much ass. That and Garys a friend, so if I'm "hanging off Gary Holt's nutsack" then so be it, much better him than the shadow of "The mighty Hetfield"

Maybe I need to listen to it pre-fatty tonight. I guess I was kinda stoked that it doesn't suck as bad as the rest of the trash they have put out(I really didn't even like AJFO). Hammetts leads on the afore mentioned song are kinda "Shenkeresque" to me and I love Michael Shenker(as does Hammett). Reign in blood is also my all time #1 as well and I do have a hard time listening to any Metallica anymore. I only dig 2 or 3 songs on DM but those 2 or 3 I feel old school bay area to me.
By the way, loved the letter. Sign my name too.
Does anyone think this leaking out may be some sort of publicity stunt? I mean WTF does a record store in France have a bunch of these CDs 2 weeks prior to the release? If so it worked cuz it even got me to listen to it which I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

I'm right there with you, and I dont mind voicing it either, But people want to assume I want MOP part II, which I dont BUT I do want "Metallica" (at least the band that I loved) back. It's simply not gonna happen, "I've held on for far to long" and it's time to just realize that what I expect and want will never happen.

My only other arguement on this are the fanboys "hanging off of Hetfields nutsack" ;) and saying this is better than Justice or Puppets.... sorry but not in a Million years is this in the same league.

Gary is indeed one of my favorites as well. I have been learning alot of songs off of "Bonded by Blood" and jammin them with my drummer friend, it's fun as hell!

Just got this email from a friend in San Francisco:

"Just listened to a few tunes from the new Tallica release. Going to cut my wrist
now... "

See I'm not that bad about it ;)

After all the talk in this thread I DL'ed last night. So far I'll say it's pretty good. A shit load better than whatever the last one was, Load, and Reload (what a steaming pile that one was). I will buy the CD when it hits the shelves so I can give it a good listen with the headphones.

it's crazy, cuz i don't even really want them back. no one can take the old shit from me and i'm okay with that.
this is why i am done with these guys now:
1 - they change their style with the "grunge-era" and failed. (not saying they went grunge at all)
2 - they continue with it stating that "it's what we WANT to play" (which is cool as hell in my book)
3 - they keep falling down, and down, and down...
4 - some kind of monster makes them look like sellout douchebags
5 - heavy music makes a comeback and all the sudden they want their glory back and put out st. anger...saying that they wanted to reconnect with the underground
6 - i listened to death magnetic and all i hear is a band that is trying too hard to sound like their old selves.
yes, slayer, testament and exodus got a bit heavier with age and kept the aggression...but metallica is not those bands, never were. they gave up their aggressiveness years ago (when all the others stuck to their guns) and now all the sudden, they wanna "cash in" and get it back? are you kiddin' me? make up your goddamn mind? just stick to what it was you were doin'...actually you can't even do that cuz you bailed on yourselves and your fans once before. you sold yourself out and now you want it back...bitch, please. shit don't work like that. not with me anyway. so if y'all dig it...that's cool. have fun listening to it but don't condemn me cuz i don't like it. i don't condemn all you for slurpin' all over it like it's the second fukn coming.

there...i fell much better now...carry on.

I still like All Nightmare Long though :D

sorry, i tend to get a bit "spirited" on the subject. :D

Me too, and everyone gives me shit for it, but I dont care. they are my opinions to voice, just like you and just like the guys who still like them....

Regardless of what it sounds like, I just don't care for it overall - the album doesn't speak to me. I enjoyed a couple tracks but that's pretty much it.

Yeah but your friend referred to them as "Tallica" which was a term they coined during their not so fan friendly years so to speak. So does his review hold water?

Yea, he's a BIG "Tallica" fan from way back like myself, he's just held on better than I have. He bought Load and liked it, bitched about it, but he liked it. Me? I bought it went to my car, listened to it and took it back inside and got my money back.

i didn't even bother buying it. i heard "until it sleeps" on the radio and knew it was over.

Yeah Jugg, you're such a friend of Gary Holt's that this thread happened on HC:

http://acapella.harmony-central.com/for ... ?t=2009973

You probably grew up best friends with Gary, went fishing with him and white-washed fences and stuff together.

:D

Anyway in all seriousness, I think you're expecting something unreasonable from this album. Bands tend to change. If they don't, they get seen as stagnant. And when they change, fans of specific periods tend to go nuts that they don't sound the same anymore. Even Exodus got slammed bigtime--on their own forums too--when the lineup changed and SHKM was released. Bunch of "we want Souza back" this and "where's Rick" that. They also got slammed a lot for their guitar sound on a few forums because it wasn't the same anymore (and since you know Gary, you know he was trying to go for a more modern/aggressive sound to fit with the times). Some slammed them for what they considered "rehashing riffs" from old albums, "trying to pass off old ideas with a slightly different sound" and so on. No one is safe from this sort of criticism, even in the case of Exodus, which didn't go "less aggressive" in any way and also weren't copying their old material either. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

So don't be surprised if even you got to talk to Hetfield, that he would ignore your criticism or just politely say "thanks for the input!" and then keep doing what he's doing. I'd ask him his opinion right now, but I'm too busy swinging from his nutsack... :D

Actually as musicians I would think we would respect music copyright laws above and beyond the general consumer. I will wait for the release myself!!
