I love the Ecstacy...

Harder to get a hold of, but my Brunetti 059 is a friggin' monster. For anything.

And then of course the Rectifier series... Diezels are awesome, but they somehow sound a tad over-compressed, which is cool if you know how to use it.

Diezels, Bogner Uberschall, and Recto's are all supposed to record well, so I hear.

If you go Diezel, get a Herbert, it's the most modern sounding of all the Diezels. :D

I've owned and / or played just about all the modernish high-gainers. When I think of "thick and modern".....Diezel Herbert and Mesa Triple Rectifier are the frontrunners.

VH4 sounded huge when I used it in the studio. Also blends well with other amps.

I recently played a Splawn Nitro that was absolutely monstrous! Not sure how well they track but in the room, it was just massive.

"Modern" tube amps have so much cascaded preamp gain, they're almost starting to sound as good as cheap Solid State amps for brutal high gain tones...
A peavey 5150 with an EQ in the loop still does it for me.

Bogner Twin Jet. Huge sound, but still holds together nice. Sort of like a Dual Rectifier with the articulation of JCM800 mixed in there. I always found Rectos smeared the low end if not dialed in perfectly.

Herbert by far. Layering it with a Marshall JMP-1 is amazing.

Splawn or Recto :D

One is dryer than the other ...but there are great recorded clips out there.

This. There's a reason they've been on a million albums. They're fantastic.

If you're into Bogner and thick heavy, I'd say Ubershall, I liked the Twin Jet I palyed for that style too.

Boosted stock Marshall 2204/2203. Also DSL is pretty good recorded

Pretty much any Fryette non Aether amp. The Deliverance tracks really well, as does the CLX. Sig X is good but I think is better in a live context, though I haven't recorded as much with it.

Peavey VTM or 5150/6505.

Recto.

Soldano SLO or Hot Rod

Friedman or any of the other major Marshall modded platforms

Bogner Uberschall or Shiva.

Diezel VH4 has been on so many records it's ridiculous over the past 18-20 years, so yeah.

I hear the Rivera Knucklehead and Bonehead amps are great recorded.

Mesa Mark IV also, if you're into Chevelle that's what Pete Loeffler used for most of their classic sounds.

Out of my personal experience, I'd say a boosted Recto or 5150. Those are what I automatically think of when I think of modern tones. A Mark IV or V would also do well.
