Dare I say that listening to 5 or so clips I almost heard no difference on my mac book speakers :aww:

Me either.

Yep. 7 sounded the most balanced out of my ear goggles, there were some nice overtones in 4 but it was a bit too mid-rich, otherwise it sounded pretty gnarly. 8 & 9 seemed too fizzy and compressed IMHO.

So ya, there it is - it'll be interesting to see what they all are

Damn, we have similar tastes, I thought the same of 8 and 9.....but, we flip flopped 7 and 4 as the best :)
Too funny!! I guess that's why we're both Mak4 and Fryette waitin'-to-be's... :D

I also have clips of the Mak4 thru the Vht if you guys would like me to post. Other amps I did were Mark IV, Herbert, and a VHT Pitbull

i just wanted to ad.

those clips sound great.

i have a gtq2 and it is really great on guitars.

i also have a tg-2 that i recently got that is really good too!

where do you have your mics positioned?

have you ever tried the sm57 and 421 combo?

By itself I like 5 the best, but #2 would probably sit best in a mix.

This !
5 sounds like a slightly darker version of 2... I like darker tones but it probably would get a little lost in the mix relative to 2

Ok guys here's some more stuff. I'm posting the actual KILLSWITCH guitar tracks that I referenced for the test because that is what I was going for and love that tone. So, you now can hear what the main tracks are. The clip starts out with the killswitch guitar tracks but then cuts to another favorite guitar recording so thats why you hear a switch in tone on the track.

Please understand that I could find something useful about all these amps and some of the amps just didn't do it for me. It's all taste and just to let you in my head one of my favorite guitar tones ever is on Faith No More's King for a day album. Just love how it cuts but its very rich and smooth. Anyways

So here's:
Herbert
Mark4
Mak4 chan 3 and 4
Powerball
Vht pitbull
Avenger

BTW--You guys rule!!! I love that everyone gets along well on this site as I have been on Gearslutz for awhile and it seems like every post turns into in argument.

Hey FUZZY--I also have a TG2 and love it. The only reason I choose the GTQ2 for guitars is because of the eq. Comes in very handy.

I'll jot down my thoughts as I go through each clip and listen.

1: Too saturated, fizz, sounds fake.
2: Good body, can hear the speakers working hard.
3: Sounds weak.
4: Fizz city
5: Too dark, didn't respond well to your picking as some other amps did
6: Too blah, like the last clip
7: This clip is a breath of fresh air, sounds great and has good presence. It's well balanced, punchy, and by far my favorite.
8: Scooped muddy fizzy shit, sounds like I just walked into Guitar Center
9: Sounds flat, undynamic. Don't like the top end.

2 or 7 for me. I think I would rather play 2 in person, but in a mix 7 would fill out the mids better.

FUZZY--- One 57 was placed on the edge of the cone and one was placed off axis to get a little more low mid out of the V30's.

I have tried a lot of combinations of mics including 57,421 57,121 57,409 and more. Those three were my fav's and if I had to choose one it would be the 57,121.

The Sennheiser 409 mic really blew me away as it has this great midrange to it.

Another great mic that a lot of people don't talk about much for guitars is the Beyerdynamic m201. Thing is a monster!

Tried an Audix i5 but it's just a little to bright for my taste.

I like 7 the best. Goes to show how important the cab is....most sound very similar if you are indeed using just the recto cab. I actually kinda like the Mark IV too.

The Avenger sounded great.
I also like the Powerball which surprised me personally.

Crwned---yeah all were the Mesa 2x12. I have tried other cabinets and I was floored at how much they changed the sound of things. I have tried bogner, marshall, mesa, and orange cabs and came down to the Mesa and a Marshall loaded with Scumbacks.

D-Rock--- I actually like the Powerball too the only problem that I have with it is the gain. That amp has the most gain I have ever heard on an amp. I think for that clip the gain was at like 3. Most amps would have to be at 9 for that gain. The powerball is also option hell like the Mark IV as there's so many ways of setting it.

on quick listen, they ALL sounded pretty darn similair. Liked them all, but 6 was my least favorite in comparison.
