This stuff put a smile on my face when it was needed after a rather horrific day at work with some bad calls. Thanks for the warm welcome too. I'm thinking I won't be showing the guys at the fire hall any of those pics some of you posted....hahaha......that's just asking for trouble and I wouldn't really know how to explain that!

Mark! Did we play in the same bands brother? I did all those rooms and towns too.
Robbie Tustin!!??? Hahaha....now THERE is a guy who'd just love a man in short shorts as I recall!
I think I may still owe him some commission money!

Cheers!

No one told you?

That depends on your answers to the following:

1) Your thoughts on the impact of EVH on rock guitar?
HUGE!

2) Tube shields impact tone? Yes or no?
Isn't tone found mostly in my new short shorts?

3) Scarves. A good look for men?
HAHAHA....no thanks

4) Does a black guitar sound better than a white guitar?
How about my white guitar that has a "black" feel and groove when playing blues?

5) Is tone in the fingers?
My tone comes strictly from the Visa company!

Hope I passed the audition

Welcome!

I agree with everyone, there are some real good people here. Being able to talk to the amp modders and builders is pretty cool too. This is the best forum I have found for music.

You rock Braddah... I was in my teens back in the 80's doing the downtown T.O. circuit... Ran the gammut, saw all the local bands - Max Webster, Goddo, April Wine (props Mark!!), and a mess of others... Shit man, 15 or 16 and getting in under age :D

HAVE to say though, I forget where that scarf signature/avatar ever went, but man, it was a doozy... No dis to the cat who was in the pic, but it was a hurtin' scene fo' sure ;)

Again, you're definitely a welcome addition to this sick and twisted family at RT!!

Peace,
Mo/V.

It sure was different back then wasn't it ? :)
You are so right about how it was. I remember pulling up to a club on a Sunday night or Monday to load in the huge PA's and light rigs we used to haul around in a 5 ton truck, we were always greeted by folks that couldn't wait for the show...even if it was the next night..lol. The crowds lined up on a Monday night...WOW!!!

The sad truth today about a PA and light rig that fits in the trunk of a compact and you're still told that it's too loud and what do you guys need all that gear for??
I have to admit we never did that size PA...lol, we still carry around something that shakes the room :)

It is a sad state of affairs that DJ's draw bigger crowds and get paid more than a live band. Like you say bands are now playing for $300 a night and performing for 15 people that don't care.

Brad and I saw Steel Panther a few weeks back at the HOB in Hollywood. Man did that bring back memories, LOUD, entertaining band with a full house on a Monday night. No one saying turn it down, the whole crowd was there to see the band, the band wasn't an annoyance while the "game" was on..lol.
To quote Brad "Man, it sure would be tough to be an ugly chick in this room tonight." The crowd was mostly "hot" girls.

Anyway being there on a Monday night, It kinda gave me hope that maybe live music could turn around again, sure put a smile on my face, regardless.

For anyone (you young dudes) that didn't experience the kind of rush playing in a band back in the 80's was ......well, I wish you could have been there, you would have loved it!

Good to have you here Mike, thanks for the memories. I'm sure Robbie would say it's ok about the commission, he made it up tenfold from the other bands.

Continuing what Mark was saying - What I've seen lately in the GTA area west of Toronto is a growing appreciation of blues and rockin' blues in the clubs/pubs. These are usually jam nights but the rooms are full all night. The crowd is a bit "older" and really appreciate live music and musicianship. They actually clap at solos!!! It almost looks like the old 80's crowd who eventually left the "bar scene" and got on with their lives.... are now divorced or single again and want something to do and they are back in the clubs. As they grew up on live music it seems the only place to get that is at these blues jams.

I was talking to a band in a small local club near Toronto doing all original music and this was a Wed night. They were from Calgary "on tour" as they put it. The only people in the room were the band, bartender, me and my wife! Great band! I bought a T-shirt and their CD because I felt bad for them and they said that's how they make "gas money" to get to the next gig! Incredible. I had initially joked I'd be calling their agent and complain about the booking and they told me this is what they all do these days.

Anybody else seeing this or something similar?

When I play out live I still carry a full size PA - bass bins etc and everything is miced.
It's not a "volume" thing - it's a tone thing which I'm sure everybody here understands more than anybody....nice full sound, bottom end, a kick drum that you can actually hear! Isn't it amazing to see all the ladies run to the dance floor when they can hear the "beat" aka: kick drum. Sorry - but I'm not bringing a little PA top with just vocals in it.

I'd love to see a revival of live bands ROCKING the clubs again with some decent volume and a thunderous sound like it should be. Let the bands do what they do! When I hire a plumber to come to my house to fix something I don't tell him to use a smaller hammer. When I see Van Halen in Toronto at the ACC I'm guessing nobody is telling them to "turn it down"

Not comparing myself to VH....just making a point.
For all you guys around the world - similar thing going on?

Cheers!

As I'm sitting here drooling over all the gear pics you guys have posted the thought crosses my mind - are you hauling that full rig down to the local pub or gig?

I sure hope so otherwise what's the point?

When I had my full W/D/W rig guys would ask - "Why do you carry all that shit"?
Then I'd fire it up, hit a few chords and the doubters would be long gone!

If I walked into a club and saw "Hard&Heavy's" wall of Diezels or Mark Day's full rig I'd shit my pants and drinks would be on me!
