Lundgren M6 vs Black Heaven

I've had both in the same guitars:

M6 - it's a little hotter & punchier with a more firm/stiff and aggressive attack under the fingers. There is a little bit of a hollow characteristic to it as well. It has quite a bit of bass. So much so that it can actually get overly boomy in some guitars despite still feeling stiff under the fingers. However, it works exceptionally well with mid focused boosts - it has enough low end that the guitar's signal doesn't get neutered and the stiff attack keeps it from getting mushy. So all in all it's a cool & unique sounding pickup, but is also a little more "particular" and not as versatile in comparison to the Black Heaven imo.

Black Heaven Ceramic - more of a medium output with more give under the fingers. It's still plenty tight and aggressive, though imo. It has noticeably less bass in comparison and has more of a mid & upper mid focus. It's not stuffy in the mids, though, and still has good openness and extension up top. It also boosts well, but depending on the guitar and rest of the signal it can get pretty mid heavy. It's more versatile than the M6 overall, but it still has that modern mid voicing going on.

Good descriptions, thanks. I can see liking both for different reasons. But for this guitar, I'm setting it up for Killswitch Engage type of tones. I know they use actives (EMG and more recently Fishman), but I prefer passive and need something that can get aggressive without being harsh. Also my amps don't have a tone of deep deep lows. They're quite tight and punchy. But not overly boomy or bass heavy. If the M6 has more bass emphasis, I can see how it would play well with boosts.

Slight necrobump, but stumbled across this searching for something else….

I have had an Alnico Black Heaven in one of my Dunable R2s for about a month or so now and am absolutely smitten by it. To the point that guitar has basically become my defacto #1 as a direct function of that change. The clarity and detail are over the top without being harsh, grating, or thin in any way. Has enough output to give some push to the front end but also cleans up well with the volume knob. In Drop C with decent gain, big chords still retain definition, pick response and dynamics are there….it is just fun to play. And I can’t actually say that I have just had “fun” playing in many years

I like Lungrens a lot. Have one Skervesen with The One set and another Skervesen with Black Heavens.

How do you like your Skervesens? I tried to order a custom build but they were so difficult to even get the order in that I gave up and went with Mayones.

I love them. I've had a Mayo Duvelle Qatsi as my only guitar the last 7 years, but I like these Skervesen as much if not a tad more TBH. I got one Skerv on a trade and liked it so much grabbed a new one 2 months later from Drop D guitars.

How long ago did you try to custom order one?

About 1-2 months ago. They were just super difficult to deal with. I had really simple questions about the ordering process and options but getting them to answer questions was like pulling teeth. But when they did, the answers made no sense. Maybe language barrier, I dunno. They have options on their order form that they don't explain and I asked what they were and they were like... who cares, it doesn't matter, there's no difference between option A and B or C. I was like uhhhh... then why the fuck do you have them as options....

Yeah I was communicating with them about 1-2 months ago myself and was interested in an in stock guitar. Their answers were a bit weird, I felt like it was more language barrier because the more I elaborated and kept asking my questions in a different way, the more desirable response I got. But I actually found one I liked more from a dealer here in the States.

I had a The One that I recently sold and still kept some M6's around. The One, like others said, had more warmth, richness, mids and low mid growl from the way its voiced and Alnico magnets and a more accessible/familiar, less specific sound than the M6's. It still had some of the same qualities and nice clarity, but with the other pickups I have it was kind of no man's land for my needs, not really ticking any boxes 9/10 or better for me, while the M6 is unique. Nothing else I've tried yet like them. I prefer other pickups when I want a more rich, warm, Alnico type flavor. The M6 needs the right guitar and styles to fit it, but when used right it's awesome

UPDATE

I put a ceramic Black Heaven in one of my Duvells. Didn't really care for it. Kinda dark and round and loose. Not aggressive enough for me. Just swapped it for an M6 and I like it more. I still need to play it more at volume, but I think it's more up my alley than the Black Heaven. Compared to the Nazgul, the M6 has less honk and a smoother mid range, while still being aggressive and tight. I'll try swapping my SD Sentient neck out for the Black Heaven neck, though. I hear M6 bridge with Black Heaven neck is a good combo.

BH in my ash body/maple neck Skervesen is bright & crazy aggressive, tighter than anything else I've tried while still being organic with cut and killer articulation.

I have a DD in my Mayo duvelle and the BH/Skerv guitar is WAY brighter, more articulate, way MORE aggressive.

Don't know what to tell ya. The Black Heaven in my Duvell was just loose and round and meh sounding. I set it to 2.5mm at the 6th string and 2.0mm at the 1st. Played with height a little but didn't experiment a ton. The pickup just seemed undefined. The M6... night and day better. My other Duvell has a BKP TKO and sounds great.
