Pick up a Nobels odr-1. It's round, smooth, and liquid-ish (with the gain up of course) plus they can be had cheap. I've got one of the old green ones and it's great for what you're after. The new ones are the same circuit I believe, there was an issue with the first run of the new models having the vol. and drive pot values reversed but they have fixed that from what I hear. If you google it you can read all about it and the hype about the old green ones and all that stuff, but they can be had for little enough coin that it could well be worth a try before you drop a bunch of cash on the boo-teeek stuff. A good big muff variant can do that liquid gilmour kinda thing, I like em for that, not an od for sure closer to a fuzz.
