looking for a channel switcher with a good clean, a pushed plexi into hot rodded marshall with room for a slightly more compressed/saturated voice, with an extra gain/ch for leads.

Sounds like a 5153 to me,...

Sounds like a
CCV or XTC.

No interest in the 5153...decent amp but not the one for me.

Had the 20th xtc... great amp but I liked my PT100 more. Been awhile since I played it and my styles and ability has changed a bit since then.. However, still no gas for the XTC.

suhrimmetal, if colossus ever needs servicing , just send back to kyle in Indiana, no problems, as where the conford who would service it? parts (from england, would be a wait on parts ? ) ? hhhhm, something to think about.

Very good point pstar and I have thought of that. Thanx for the thought tho :) Been listening to clips and clips of the Colossus, MK50II, and VH4... the minute i think Im almost decided, another clip changes my mind.. I know they are all good amps. I just need ONE that will be great for me and I can be happy with my rig and get back to getting my chops up. Im waiting on a certain email from a 'player' that may help me with my process. Cheerz

1 amp, u may want more than 1 good channel even though it may have 2 channels, usually 1 channel is nice and the other is not so nice. Colossus has 4 channels, lots of tone shaping on all 4 channels and all footswitchable = variety of tones at your feet on the fly changes = great versitale amp for live. Considering the cost to features benefits, it wins holds down. These amps will increase in value/cost. I think its ground floor opportunity being new amp company. I wish i was amp shopping.

The Rhodes guy (Kevin, I think) has been willing to send the amp around for demos in the past. Maybe you could work something out if you gave him a call. I'd love to check one out. It came to the Bay Area but I just couldn't make it out in time. The people that had it were seriously impressed.

Hey there, I believe you're referring to Ted -- a handful of guys came out to his place to play the demo amp while he had it earlier this year. Ted ordered one of his own shortly after, and he's still more than willing to host demos, and actually has a couple more lined up in January. He's jokingly referring to himself as "Rhodes West Coast".

I'll PM you Ted's info in case you're interested.

Hey Cory,

I'm not sure if this was ever posted on RT, but this is a video of Andy Wood rocking the Colossus at a clinic in Raleigh not long ago. I think it demonstrates the singing qualities of the Lead 2 channel. Andy really makes it rip, IMO, as biased as it may be. :D

The Cornfords are really straight forward, point to point amps....no issue to work on, for anyone competent.

FWIW, I think Rhodes to Cornford is like Apples to Oranges.

Indeed, the Colossus comes with a 5 year warranty. If you live in an area where it's not convenient to ship, we will work with a local tech and handle the billing accordingly.

Hey Kyle,

That vid is neat and all but it would help if Andy was a better player   ... Damn that guy is inspiring..and a cool dude as well. Lead 2 voicing sounds very good in that vid..the tapping parts are defined as hell, you can hear EVERY note. Thanx for the vid and I will be in touch.

Much Respect,

Cory

wish the colosuss was around back when i toured heavily. They would have filled my amp racks.

Thanks Cory, I really like that video too. I wish the recording had more level, but I still sounds damn good, especially for a room recording. Thanks to Paul Warren at RMA for recording and posting it!

FYI, Andy's amp has the "Wood Mod" permanently installed, essentially the same as both of the switches on the back in the 'up' position. Andy's amp has these mods permanently installed as we tweaked his amp in my shop this past July.

In terms of versatility and tweakability, it seems to me the Rhodes is the one with the most tone shaping options (among other things). The amount of sculpting you can do is pretty impressive.

I got to play Kyle's demo Colossus at a show earlier this year and was blown away. I'm not a great player, but I feel like the amp complimented my playing well, it made me sound better!

Also, the fact that Kyle could work with you on aspects of the amp and make it a little more custom is a big selling point IMO. In the brief times we've spoke and exchanged emails, the willingness and ability he has to tweak his designs is pretty awesome. Beyond that, the way his rigs and switching systems are all designed seem to be pretty unique, bulletproof and forward thinking.

I only WISH I had the extra scratch to buy a Rhodes. It really is one of the most unique and enjoyable amps I've ever played.

It's embarassing to show this after hearing clips of Andy Wood and others playing the amp, but here's the Colossus when I played it:

this is board audio and a bit raw/unpolished, but the thing cut through and was a beast!

I love the tone from these clips. Pissed off, meaty, and just plain nasty aggression!!

Well, all I can say is that this 'one amp and out' notion sure is keeping ya here for a while

This thread's made me start eyeballing the Rhodes line up (damn it!!), the CCV and pretty well everything else I haven't owned :D

Good luck with this regardless... VH4 is a killer amp. I love my 20thA EL34, I'd LOVE to hammer a Rhodes unit as I never have. Fortin makes outrageously awesome amps (as many of us know). The Hagen is off the charts. Cornford is serious kerrangy woody goodness. What about Fuchs?? They're incredible as well.

See... this really could go on for a long, long time. I think the premise to your original post is the exact and very reason this forum thrives. There never is just one.

Currently Rhodes Colossus/Cornford MK50II/New PT100/VH4/2 ch Fortin

Hopefully have my ONE and done "ME" rig shortly after NAMM. 4 Gigs coming up and then a few weeks off to demo and figure shit out. Cheerz
Haven`t heard the Rhodes Colossus in person but (from listening to the clip above) i cannot understand how that amp can be your first choice when you listed Andy Timmons first on your list of desired tones. Also the VH4 wouldn`t by any means be my first choice when looking for the tones listed above. Surely Diezel amps are fine amps, i had an Einstein head myself but the Diezel`s are nowhere near in the league of a Marshall when you are looking for the classic `80-`90 tones. Well everything a matter of taste but anyone who heard my Diezel together with my JVM said the same. I do not want to bash on the Diezel`s cause they are really great amps but more suited for modern stuff.
I can nail every tone you mentioned with my JVM. If i where you i rather would choose a Marshall or a Bogner 20th Shiva/ XTC.

Got out 6 of my amps today and had a quick muck around and testing the amps. Generally, I get on a kick, and keep one out for a week or two, but I wanted to hit them all one after another. It would have been nice to have my Eggie SS4 switcher back! Each played through a 412 Bogner with 25 watt Scumback M/H75's. The test song was Creeping Death with my KL Explorer and JH EMG's. For this type of feel, punch and girth, nothing touched the Cali.

In order of kick-ass and shit-eating grin potential:

1. Fortin 2-Channel Cali Mod with parallel loop. Just the right amount of everything with the gains centered and the MV around 1:00.
2. Cameron Original CCV
3. Cornford MK50H II (it was a toss up. The Corndog runs a little looser than the CCV). Cool functionality with the two loops/OD boost/2nd master switching.
4. Cameron Aldrich Mod (always the standby, lots of grunt and growl). Basic, without a loop.
5. Wizard MTL (a little on the metal side (duh) of tone - no loop). Kicks ass though.
6. Bogner XTC 101B Cameron Modded (cool amp, typical Boggie vibe, good switching, excellent loop but too far away from the vibe I like).

I didn't play my Aldrich mod that Dan Gower made me today or my other Fortin one-off Moose Knuckle mod or the other CCV. I haven't spent much time with them lately.

After I finished, I realized that I should have got the Zoom recorder out with the impromptu solo amp fest. Dammit......

Steve...that lineup sounds fun!! I will just take the Fortin, Cameron, and Cornford and then I'll be good   Honestly tho, The Cameron CCV and Cornford are still very much on my mind.. I may have put the VH4 out of the running..hmmm.. Been emailing some good players and good ears and the CCV's and Cornfords keep coming up..must be a reason

As far as the members above post about me and Andy Timmons and Im going the wrong route in search of an amp.. AT is an idol of mine.. Im not trying to sound like him, I just jam on his stuff when I get some time to just noodle.. I can dial back my volume/tone knobs with about any amp, throw a bb preamp on it with some delay and be close enuf to suit me.. Or just push a clean channel a bit and be in the same area. Andy's tone is in his soul.. No one sounds like him.. Im not trying to..he's just one of my big influences. Cheerz and thanx for your input...It probably won't be a JVM for me.

colossus 2 clean channels and r based on the baseman 50''s circuit, u can get great fender breakup if there pushed, just use the gain knob, done, or your bb, i would not touch a new marshall.
