I would only add this:
How many hobbies/passions/interests are out there, that we spend a lot of money/time on, and in the end we can sell all of it and get our money back...in some cases make a profit...or, lose a bit but still get a good amount back?
Think about it. I used to play a LOT of golf growing up. Played competitively, nothing pro level or anything but I played 36 a day for a few summers and had a legit 2 handicap. Those days are gone now lol...but, back then I dreamed of going to Scotland and playing all those windswept old courses. That's not a cheap trip these days, and sure I'd have the memories which is cool. But that's a 12k vacation spent. With gear, we can get a lot of that cash back someday when we decide to sell.
One way of looking at it.

In the last year especially since last fall most folks i reach out to in a 300 mile radius at least 5+ people a week are hanging it up.
Can't play b/c of health reasons, lost interest whatever including this morning 3 folks "hanging it up"
The era of "the guitar player" & "the band" is dying off.
I turned down a band last week they played festivals which is what i wanted but they had a chick singer & keys and wanted me
- to play "Pink" & "Meghan Traynior." I told them my heart wouldn't be in that.
After the rock generation is gone what we got ?
A nation of "Influencers" addicted to legal alcohol, vaping, weed, tic tock & gamling with no jobs.

Ive already made a deal last year to make a bulk sell all my gear. Its only a matter of time.
Too bad really cuz i needed all this gear in the 80's & 90's when i was raising 2 kids & running a business.
There are a handful of bands in my area i know them all some over 40 years and they got a lock on the gig scene.
Not interested in "bar bands" playing to the drunk boomers packing Smith & Wessons.

There are only a handful of common sense, "middle" like myself left on this Earth, so I'll throw this out here, even though I'm sure nobody cares, lol.
Music and particularly guitar has been the one constant in my life. To be in a band at almost 56 years old and still excited to see a new guitar on the wall is a blast and even when I can no longer play, I'll still write music, shop for guitars, etc.
The other thing is that the big truck driving, American flag waving, super right dude and the left leaning, LGBT supporting guy both have the right to be who they are. As far as illegals go, using a broad brush to paint what an illegal is, helps nobody. I've lived in areas with gang members but but have also lived places with hard working people who love it here more than people who were born here and don't appreciate it.
I have chosen not to hate and it is hard because I have friends and family from as extreme on each side as you can imagine. My Dad is going to probably pass away here in the new future and I lost two friends to suicide this year and another to cancer. I'm not trying to preach and there is nothing wrong with battling on forums, having a bad day, etc. I can tell you though, one day you are going to realize you are wasting your time trying to convince millions of people to feel like you do.
My focus is on my band, my family, guitars and rock and roll until the day I die. I just want to create and find ways to help others. Life is too short and in my 56 years i've never seen so much anger and issues all over the world. My family has been split by issues, my high school friends who all were like brothers and sisters have let politics ruin a lifetime of relationships. It's all bullshit.
Sorry for the lame speech. I get it if people don't want to hear it and hopefully if nothing else, it will motivate someone to apologize to someone else or at least go buy a new guitar.

Self pity paralyzes me as a "victim". I had alot go wrong as a kid & young person that had nothing to do with me, but that has nothing to do with who i am today.
I try to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.
Each day is a gift & not a gaurantee.
Respect is earned and not given.
I don't take abuse from anyone anywhere.
But i like a good joke.

I see this turned more than just political but I like how we can hash things out without *reporting and banning people. 
I'm pretty close to @rsm on this so I say if it brings you enjoyment then buy, sell, trade, play, don't play, all you want.
@nightlight - I was starting to follow your logic and I get what you are saying but I disagree on your damned if you do/damned if you don't philosophy. Now, if you were 50+ years old and bought a bunch of expensive gear thinking that was going to get you into a band only to find yourself locked out or unable - I guess I can see that. Which reminds me, @charveldan - what was the name of the band that invited you to join?
I suck at guitar but it brings me enjoyment and I like the sound/feel of tube amps. May have to downsize to digital same day due to life, but for now I'm going to crank it up.
Lastly - selling and shipping gear just sucks imo so when that day comes, I think I'd get more enjoyment out of giving stuff to a school or junior guitarist.
Sorry if my post is just digging up dirt. I was enjoying my weekend away from the Internet. Some of you should try it

This is where I'm at too. I don't have any heirs to leave things to. When the day comes where I'm no longer physically able to play I'll start giving my stuff to a music school or some young kids who would truly appreaciate having a nice amp/guitar.

For my own part I just love playing guitar. After playing guitar for couple of hours it is as if I had been on vacation. It is nice to have a hobby, in addition to sports, which resets my brain. I also like checking/buying new gear and visiting guitar shops during my work or leisure travels. I spend a lot of time in hotels so maybe I should bring a guitar with me every once in a while. Yes, I still get excited when picking up the guitar so it is quite difficult to think life without music or guitarplaying. As far as gear acquisitions go, they don’t affect my life but I am still considering seriously before buying new stuff because I really don’t *need* it. Wanting is another thing…
