So is the Atomica really THE Atomica Curt played?

My memory of the amp was that there was a single, added master volume on the back. I don't think it was even a a push/pull. I think Mark used to do a Low Gain/High Gain Jose that was switchable between the two with a push/pull master.

As for the diode clipping or whatever, I don't know if this amp had it. I'm pretty sure that Joe Holmes amps do have it and he had probably the best tone I ever heard. So you want to talk about golden amp Jose mods, you have to throw Joe's amps in that mix.

I know Dave Friedman was inside of Joe's amps and Martin Golub has been servicing them for years. Apparently Joe has 6 Jose mods and David Phillips from LA Sound Design (where Golub works) says Joe's heads are the best Jose mods he has ever heard.

Throw my two Jose's in there as well. Incredible sounding. I know you never heard them, but you've heard my far more versatile re-creation of that tone (and more)... :)

I could see where the added MV could have added the gain depending where it was placed, this sounds like what you have been talking about IMO. The EVH low gain I played did not even have a MV installed, you have to get the power section cooking to get to the brown and a tad above.

It must have been killer being out there during that time like Steve, seeing the birth of higher gain amps and all the guys trying to keep shit a secret

The funny thing about that is I never tried to keep any of it a secret. I hipped several players to Jose... A lot of people already knew who he was, but didn't know how to find him...

One time, my band was playing on a bill with Poison at the Country Club in Reseda. Cool club - could hold about 2K and with Poison playing the headline spot, we knew the place would be packed when we were playing since we were on right before them (they were about to be signed and a white hot draw at the time). Anyway... we did our sound check and while we ran through instruments and a couple song parts, CC Deville came into the room and was hanging by the sound board. So, we finish our sound check and I'm talking with Randy, our singer in back of our set when I notice CC is standing in front of my rig writing down the settings on my amp and EQ... So I come out from behind the amps and since I'd seen he was running a stock amp, I told him the settings wouldn't do him any good since my amp had been modded by Jose. I showed him some of the features and he said he dug the tone I was getting. Gave him Jose's info... It was kinda funny, he was a good dude though, even though he kinda tried to play off what he was doing... Next I saw them play, I could see the telltale signs of a Jose mod on his main amp...

The VTM was created from Brian Jay's 50 watt Jose Marshall, the Golden amp was not used :) I can provide more info on that if you need it.

+100

That was always my understanding of the VTM.

How very odd that the one amp that could prove it's the amp and not the fingers....slipped through Curt's hands

Your neck is not going to slip through my hands when I strangle you. Will you squat down a little so I can reach your neck? ;)

This has turned into the ultimate fishing story of high gain amps :)

While Steve may have been Mr. Accommodating and willing to help everyone else on the Sunset Strip try and dial in killer tones, I wasn't. :D I tried to keep "my" sound a secret.

The funny thing was it was probably late 1984 or early 1985 when my band saw Rough Cutt on television. Our drummers dad had a killer TV and stereo set up being an audio geek. We were just FLOORED listening to Rough Cutt's guitar sound. It was so huge and heavy and thick and saturated, we had never heard anything like it (except for Icon's 1st album). Anyway, Rough Cutt came to town and our other guitarist Sean got to go backstage because his older sister was smokin' hot and got to go backstage whenever she wanted. At this show she was towing her kid brother Sean with her.

While Amir may have been interested in Seans sister when they started talking, the topic soon turned to Amir's guitar rig and Sean got to see it as it was being wheeled through the backstage area. Amir was openly talking to him about everything in there. Amir's tech was named Dallas and was on hand to talk about it too. So what he learned was that it was all about Marshall 2203 and 2204's (stock) and the Furman PQ3 and the Roland SDE3000 to split in stereo. Armed with that info, I began to search for a Furman. At first, I had the PQ3 and a Rockman Stereo Chorus which was surprisingly huge sounding. Then I picked up a Lexicon PCM41 and used that to split in stereo. I was in 80's tone heaven.

And since Amir was so open and honest at helping young players find cool tones, I decided to be the opposite.  Once I was clued into that "tone club", I didn't want anyone else to know what I was using...... what a jerk

Here's a funny pic of some weird, big haired fruit loop in silly boots with a Charvel San Dimas standing in front of my rig. Notice you can clearly see his amps, but for some reason there is something hanging down over that rack sitting on top of the flight case. I wonder what was under that?

Pics of your friends sister?

No pics of her. Sorry. She was hot though. You remember hot blonde chicks dressed to kill for 80's rock shows? She fit that stereotype well. She was going out with the singer of a band that was older than us that we all used to look up to and go to all their shows and hang around with. You know why they hung out with us? Because we were all 16-18 years old and our group of friends was full of 15-18 year old girls. ;)

And that singer of that band did my 16 year old girlfriend two weeks after I moved to LA. I bust his balls about it on Facebook every now and then. I ask him what the statute of limitations is

OK, fine weirdo. It was Vince, the guy in the middle. He was such a cool guy, I wasn't even mad at him. And now, I was 18, and living in LA and playing in a band in the 80's, freed of my midwestern girlfriend.
