I wish I would have kept my Mojave and left it stock. I'd rather experiment with a cheaper Marshall-y platform. One of the old 100W '68 spec metro kits, or a Ceriatone, or even an old JMP would be a great modding platform... If I wasn't building my own amp now, that is exact;y what I'd do...

Steve

My Mojave is probably my least valuable amp. $3100 new and they sell for about $1200 used. My '70 and '72 Marshalls are worth more.
I know, but you could get a '78 JMP, which is a great modding platform, for $800

Steve

Yeah, but look at it this way. If you already have the amp, $50 will get you all of the top shelf parts you need to turn that thing into something you'ld love to play rather than something that collects dust in the corner until you finally bite the bullet and take a big loss on selling it, and you could always put it back to stock if you ever wanted to sell it.

Here's a little info on Ed's amp.
http://www.pleximods.com/evhspec.html

Ed's magic Marshall is what's being referred to as the golden amp?

That is in reference to a 2 channel amp that Jose and EVH had been working on for years that never saw the light of day production wise for many reasons. It was played at one show on the Monsters of Rock tour in 88 which was the LA Coliseum. It was 2 amps in one, EVH plugged into one side and Sammy in the other.

nothing really special going on here, other than a few oddball part substitutions. Dave Friedman has since restored it to stock specs.
  For nothing really special, people certainly obsess over its details :)

BTW, that Arson OT is a 1.5" stack, 1.7K Raa and the primary inductance is a bit more than 3 times that of a Dagnall C1998.

Cheers,
Mike

There's like 35 threads on the front page. If these guys want to do a little obsessive Van Halen tone recipe stuff in one thread, once a year on Rig Talk, I'm all for it.

Keep it up OBGYN and others. If I get tired of it, I won't click on the thread.

+1 and it is all rather interesting if we can keep the butthurt out of it. Keep it coming. Lots of good info for reference.

Steve

You all need to learn how to play left handed...

What year was that?

Ed by 2000 was playing modern high gain amps and not plexi type amps.
